For the coolant, if the coolant has air bubbles it can get hot and act weird. Try burping it, meaning wherever the radiator cap is, jack up that portion of the car (make sure you jack is in an ok spot) so that the rad cap is higher than other parts of the engine. Take off the rad cap (make sure engine is cold, obviously), start the car and let it run for a while like this. BHG causes all sorts of problems, if your car is burped right and cooling system (rad, fans, tstat, lines not clogged, water pump) all works, then it would probably be BHG.

For the gas thing, don't drive it again until its fixed because you dont want a fire. Could be a ton of things.. upload a pic of it, that would help.

Don't run it, I hate seeing burnt Mk3s........

Wait until it's dry.
Have some one start the car while you have your head under the hood.
Tell them to only let it run for a few seconds before shutting it off.
You should be able to spot where the fuel is leaking.
If you get a smell of gas, or see it running down from some unknown point,
wait for it to dry before doing it again, only watch in that general area.
Fuel leaking down by the starter can ruin your day (fuel & ignition source).

Look closely at all connections points, like the bottom of the fuel filter, line from filter to the fuel rail, around the fuep pressure regulator, the return line,
and around the top of the injectors.

Take your time, you will find it.

Oh, and have a large extingwisher handy.......
(the toy ones that people display in their cars to look cool wouldn't extingwish a lawnmower fire)

jumper fp to b+ in the diag. box with the key on. Turns the Fuel Pump on without the engine running. More than likely either banjo bolt seals on the cold start injector, or down on the fuel rail. Could be a poorly seated injector to fuel rail seal as well.
