coolant leak

i dont know anything of a bleeder valve other than the "valve" in the radiator cap that opens under pressure. to bleed the air from your engine you have to do it by removing the radiator cap and letting the air out. it can even mean getting your car on a hill to help fish out all the air. there are steps to doing this but i'm kinda busy and dont want to tell you the wrong steps. i ended up getting all my air out on level ground. so someone else will have to elaborate on that.

did you read the whole thread? well, either way...its possible you have a blown headgasket, which can cause coolant overflow which only contributes to overheating.

if you blew a radiator, there's a chance you have a lot of pressure in your system from a blown headgasket and changing the radiator will only potentially blow more radiators. i would test to see if you have a blown headgasket, one way is to get a 50 dollar test-kit from an auto store and it will tell you if there are exaust gasses in your coolant. i'd tell you to see if you have a very stiff coolant hose when the engine is running but if you blew a radiator and its puking coolant, chances are that's a given.

if your mechanic doesnt know about blown headgaskets, get a different mechanic, its definitly something to be aware of with the 7m engines. best of luck, hopefully its not a BHG but right now i cant think of what else would cause you to overheat.

UNLESS your fan shroud is gone and you live in a hot climate...OR your fan clutch is out and you arent getting proper airflow.... it overheats...and i guess that could cause the coolant to overheat enough to pop something.

anyone else got more ideas?

The mechanic checked for a BHG but said it did show anysigns or test for one.

I thought I fixed it earlyer today and drove it to work. drove fine no over heating. a little higher then norm, but fine.
drove it home and it over heats. the top rad hose was under a lot of preassure like it has been last few times it has over heated. But this time i had some tools on me and just took out the thermostat, Which was wide open, and then started it up again and all the preassure that was there is gone. and when i squezze the top hose I could feel coolent rushing through again like the repair book said I should be able to feel.

so even though the thermostat was wide open it was still presurized... any ideas why?

maybe the auto parts store gave me the wrong one, even though it is identical to the old one.

I really am out of ideas..........sadly i need a working car and don't want to get rid of it.

Edit: yes I did read the whole thread. and if this doesn't make much sense i'm sorry. it's been a long day and i'm stressed out over my car and some other things.

my car overheated randomly, my guess was the air in the system caused by the exaust getting into the system. then the air prevented cooler water from flowing.

dont get rid of it. you'll figure it out.

so the mechanic checked and did NOT find signs of a BHG? that's good.

you do have enough antifreeze in there right? could possibly be it...

did you bleed the air out of the coolant? if you hear a waterfall sound behind your dash (water/air rushing through heater core) then you probably have air in the coolant and air doesnt conduct heat like water so it will cause hotspots.

If you had pressure, then it isn't your radiator cap...I would look at the radiator possibly being clogged, or the water pump being bad (fins may be erroded). Or you could have a blockage in one or more of your head/block coolant passages. I would also pressure test the cooling system, just for posterity.

BTW...you shouldn't have to bleed the cooling system, a properly working system will purge it's self of any air bubbles pretty quickly, just keep you eye on the coolant level in radiator and bottle, and check for pressure often.

When you top off the radiator, always fill it ll the way to the brim.

i forgot to follow up. well against the advice of basically Everyone i pulled the thermostat out. and old tymer told me just to loose it and see what happens. so i did, no over heating anymore. it takes a little longer to get up to temp at night when its cold but stays right at normal temp now. no other issues at all, the car has been running as good as ever.

i dont have any more leaks, i think the leak was the hose coming from the top of the motor behind the spark plugs. i got the hose seated and clamped down better.

i know its just a band aid fix, i still have coolant boiling over into the catch can. i never loose any coolant though which is odd, it stays level.

im just waiting for the head gasket to Really blow then do the motor swap and be done with it.

ok. i took it to a very awsome japanese import car shop. the guy there said they had tested many different after market thermostats there and only very few ever worked. but the ones that always did work were the ones from the car's maker. so try geting a toyota thermostat and see if that works better or not.
i'm going to try it out soon as i can but it's holiday season so have to wait

i just replaced the thermostat in my car, having a similar problem, and the car stopped overheating and loses little to no coolant now.

maybe it had an air bubble?

taking the thermostat completely out could reveal if its the problem.

i dont know if there are risks to that though... having a cold engine too long isnt a good thing...i dont think. (thats why there is a thermostat.)

WOAH ok i should have read that before my last post. whoops.

ok... so you have coolant filling the overflow when the engine heats up? i think it'ss normal to see a little extra coolant in there when the engine is hot, its not normal for it to reach the top and squirt out the overflow tube. i believe the manuals even state NOT to check the levels when the engine is hot, so that must mean some fluid exchange into and out of the overflow bottle is totally normal, as long as it doesnt reach empty, and the bottle is so big to allow for the expansion.

so by "boiling over" do you mean filling the bottle a bit, a lot, or getting to the brim and squirting out? i was thinking you meant it was squirting out of the overflow tube but you say its staying level?? so that must mean you never lost any fluid, thus it never spewed out onto the ground...? k...i'm tired...sorry if that was confusing but i'm not staying up any more. lol.

are you referring to the rubber gasket that slips around the metal of the thermostat? or is this a seal between the two pieces that surround the thermostat that bolt together?

I have a rubber seal around the thermostat that i felt had enough pressure against the metal to seal fine. i thought i needed a seal between the surrounding metal but turns out i didnt.

but maybe thats why my engine looks moist around the PS pump.... dunno.

I MIGHT HAVE AN IDEA, TRY LOOKING UNDER THE CARPET ON THE PASSANGER SIDE IR DRIVER SIDE. IT MIGHT LEAK FROM THA HEATER CORE UNDER THE DASH BOARD AND LEAKS DOW TO THE FLOOR AND ON TOTHE EXHAUST THAT. CAUSING TO SMELL. THATS WHAT IM FIXING RIGHT NOW ON MY CAR LOTS OF WORK YOU NEED TO REMOVE DASH AND DROP THE STEARING COLUM. HOPE YOUY STILL READ THIS, AND CHECK THAT :)
