I need some help on my parents computer. A. the computer has a 598 MHz P3 and i was wondering if i can just drop a 1 gig MHz P3 in its place?? Also, i have a problem with some adware. I have used Norton, Mcafee, and some other software and they can not remove the adware. I keep getting a baloon on the bottom right of my sceen on Xp and it says that "you have a trojan and network virus you need to click hear to download a FREE scan" If you click it you come to a screen giving you three choices to download. They are all free scan only, you have to pay 29.95 to remove the adware they found on their free scan. So, can anyone help???? Thanks, Shelby

I'm not sure if you can drop in a faster P3, it has to be the same socket type.

Use ad-aware to get rid of adware. It's made by Lavasoft.

I'm guessing that "Free Scan" thing is part of a virus or adware, don't click it.

the upgraded processor:
yes it is possible but first you need to check out a few things.find out what style of blade the processor is. next you need to find out what kinda of motherboard you have and see if it supports speeds up to 1ghz. this can be done by doing a google search for the motherboard model number and specs.

the adware:
download ms defender if you can. macafee is pretty much junk. get ad-aware from downloads.com also. that balloon you keep seeing is actually adware/spyware and is useless.

This is a bitch to delete.. My father had it on his laptop, The problem is when you remove it with ad-aware or any remover program it comes back. U have to find the file and boot into safe mode command prompt only, and delete it. PREVX1.COM has software that finds it. Just let it remove it, write down the file it IDs and then do the safe mode delete of the file and the entire folder its in. That did it for my fathers laptop.

That adware sounds like one that i had, ended up in my master boot record.. PITA to remove, i ended up just formating.

This is what you should do to delete any adware or malware. Go download a program called hijackthis. Look it up on google and there are free downloads everywhere.

Go to geekstogo.com and Register a name there. It's a forum with "experts". On the left hand side, click on "malware removal-hijackthis logs".

Do the scan on hijackthis, post your log on there and someone will tell you what to remove. It will be as simple as checking the adware and clicking a remove button. They will tell u what to remove so you dont fuck up your computer.

Best thing of all is that you'll learn alittle and it's FWEEEE

i think P3s were only made in socket 370.. so it would really just be dependent on motherboard compatibility..

As far as adware/spyware and the like.. try Spybot Search and Destroy.. its free and works everytime

Not true, I've had Spybot fail many a time on the family computer. However, with the exception of properly programmed stuff (which is maybe .05% of all shit on the web) Spybot S&D gets the job done. Any time something pops up that tells you your computer is infected, guess what.

It IS the infection.

As for the rest of it, I think virus "protection" like Norton Anti-Virus is a good bit overrated. It slows your computer down massively, and if you know what you're doing, you can do it's job, better, for free, with no computer slow down issues. I recommend getting a couple (read: more than one) good firewalls like Zone Alarm Pro (PM me, I can get free serials) and you should be good to go. Delete MacRappy period. It can't even pretend to protect your computer.

If you use firefox and a good firewall you don't have to worry about viruses from porn tony . Zone Alarm Pro has anti-spyware built in that is as good as Spybot, which is why I recommended it.
