so far the only answer that makes sense based on the problem.

update your audio drivers.

Not if he's got MusicMatch, Yahoo Music Player, Winamp Agent, or a million other programs sending calls to the audio driver, and stalling the system via a bad RPC.

Remember, too, that a stall in the audio is simply the most noticeable, since you hear it - and even minor hiccups in audio will piss a person off ;)

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, go to Processes, and see how many processes you have running.

Use MSConfig to trim down your startup.

Install Spybot, update it, disable Tea-Timer (just because it will probably annoy you, unless you are a seriously paranoid user) and run it.

Remove Norton.

Install Avast and register it (yay free antivirus minus the MEMORY HOG)

Install CCleaner, run it.

Defrag.

Call it a day ;)

Do you have anything you really need on your computer?

I don't screw with AV software, I use ZAP and if anything starts acting up and I can't get rid of it normally, I download hack tools. If I can't get rid of it with that, reformat. I don't have any vital information on my comp, and my personal information used is unimportant, so this works fine for me.

EDIT: Net tools not hack tools

What in the hell? Spybot S&D is Ad-Aware, HiJackThis, and Asquared all rolled into one!

Spybot + Avast Antivirus (get rid of Norton, man) will keep you clear of damn near everything out there.

Im a fan of HiJackThis and SmittFraud + Avast! That combination is almost unbeatable. Also check out Housecall from trend micro. It also does a good job.

Norton is possibly the worst virus scan that you can have. Ide rather have none.
