Hi gang,
I bought an 87 n/a 5spd off of a guy who put in a new engine. The car runs great but some of the vacuum lines and wiring is messed up. Fixed most of the vacuum problems, but I cannot determine where the wire from the a/c compressor connection (gray) gets hooked into. I have searched wiring diagrams and removed the fuse box and searched around. The wire from the compressor is black and I have found nothing. Please help. Thanks, Gary gycincy@cinci.rr.com

It goes to the A/C clutch relay under the fuse box:

The second wire exiting the clutch goes to ground on the compressor.

Thanks, I found that part and figured that this was the clutch, but I thought I might find a wire that may be taped off. The plug into the clutch is full, so I will try to find the hot wire. Any idea what the wire color is. I cannot find the schematic for the compressor electrics in the service manual or the crappy haynes book. Thanks for your help, you don't know how much I appreciate it.

The wiring for the AC is in the service manual so I'm at a loss as to why you can't find it. That said the EWD I pointed you at is better. Although it's for a later model year the wiring colors are the same as in your car. What's the problem, no clutch engagement? Is there refrigerant in the system? Does the clutch engage when powered directly?

Sorry, wiring is my weakest point in auto mechanics. I will look again. Since there is no power to the clutch at this point, of course it won't engage. And yes, it does need refrigerant, but I can't fill it till I get power to the a/c clutch. Thanks for you help, I'll try the manual/book again.

Due to the low pressure cut out switch the clutch will not engage without refrigerant in the system and it usually doesn't need to be engaged to charge enough to close the switch. That said you can always power it directly for a few moments if needed or jumper the switch assuming that's the only problem. There are better ways though. Warming the refrigerant container for example. Or charging with liquid, assuming you know what you're doing and understand the risks.
