not sure on the name of it, but its like cylindrical, with the port on one end for the boost to come in, and 6 small holes around it near the top, and on the top is the screw adjustment and the vac. port

I have a genuine HKS SSQV and I have pretty much the same problem as the OP. When under part throttle, building <3-4lbs, the BOV tends to flutter. Anything above that it works fine. The HKS bov's removed their adjustments so I have no way to change the spring tension. This kinda pisses me off because I have been through 2 stock replacement turbo's with no shaft play. I just installed one ~1 month ago. We will see how long it lasts.

won't matter so far as I know, sinc ethe adjustment screw is only to TIGHTEN the spring...

Disasssemble it (it's stupid easy, same as my Type II knock-off), and see if there is some kind of spacer behind the spring cup...

Check your vaccuum as well, one vaccum leak could ruin your day...

I don't think vacuum is the problem for me, I'm getting ~20 in/Hg on my gauge. I will disassemble it in the spring and see if I can determine the issue.

sounds like you have a HKS Racing Type II yes, it's surge whore... it's made for high HP cars where the SSQV won't vent enough.

I have the hks SSQ and I get surge at low boost levels, usualy at 1psi or lower though. Above that and it usualy works fine, would surge from that little of boost hurt things much?

I have an 11psi spring in my TiAL and it likes to flutter with anything at 1-5psi. Anything above that, and it sounds like a laser beam followed by a heavy whiplash sound. I love it. :biglaugh:

It's all about the spring. My friend is running a TiAL on his Supra but with a 9psi spring, and his blows off with ANY psi. It's quite a difference.

Nate - How much vacuum are you pulling at idle?

I have the ebay Greddy Type-RS and it crapped out on me. It will hold the pressure, just doesn't "blow off". So, I hooked the stock one back up. I'm going to order one from Driftmotion.

But, the type-rs is adjustable and is very easy to do. I loved it when it worked right.
