a couple of things:

1) wrong section... more so general so ill move it for ya ;)

2) paradise racing is one of the better places to get it... luis is a good guy ...and the prices are very competitive...

3) titans hg is a replica of the hks mhg...NOT a cometic...i dont care how much they say its the same as a cometic... having said that... it needs the prep a normal HKS MHG would...which leaves cometic still being the better choice...

4) i have a cometic for sale...stock bore ready to be shipped out... looking for $175 shipped... that seems to be about the going rate i guess... as cometic changes their prices a lot. let me know if you want it.

are you saying that the cometic dosnt require the block to be prepped? (aside from normal old gasket material removal.)

im not positive, but im pretty sure there was a post on the old supramania (before hack)about this. In my opinion, a laminated steel head gasket is a laminated steel head gasket and ALL should have the same prep work done, even though some people have run them successfully with less, im sure others have run an HKS (or any other for that matter)
under similar conditions.

If they dont need the prep work, why? how is there construction different? do they use a different type or grade of steel? Is there a special coating? If so, what is it?

not trying to step on any toes, im open to other opinions. I want to see factual evidence(not someone who has done it with no problem) before I believe they are any different
from the norm

hmmm maybe lol...i PERSONALLY dont feel the need to resurface the block as long as theres no warpage and all the previous material has been scraped away nicely..but take that for what its worth.......but its a given the cometic doesnt need near the glass surface the hks does to seal properly...

i personally dont know the ACTUAL differences...what i DO know is that they ARE different... just look at the RA recommendations for each...obviously the cometic has something the hks/greddy/titan DONT.

i also KNOW that the titan version IS the same as an HKS/GREDDY version... ive seen them and they look exactly the same... whereas the cometic is slightly different...

yep the cometic does have something diff, a rivet that has to be drilled out :p

greddy i dont know, never seen. i have had both the titan and the hks gaskets and the sealing surface of the hks is a little more "fuzzy" feeling.

OK you are referring to Cometic recommending an RA of less than 50 and other recommending something smoother & IIRC one of the others recommends an RA of less than 25. I got my figure for Cometic's 50 from one of their reps on the phone. I read the 25 for the other maker by a member once.

Now just because a manufacturer recommends a different number does not necessarily mean that it is more forgiving or less forgiving. The RA manufacturers suggest is based on how they see it as well--opinions vary & marketing tactics vary. One may feel that recommending a smoother surface is better because more successful applications will result. Another may recommend a higher max RA because it would benefit their sales to sell to those that can't get as low as 25 RA.

Now you SHOULD get an RA of less than 50 for a Cometic. If you don’t, you are taking you chances. Here is a bad example: It is just like if someone said I was speeding @170mph & I got away with it. That does not mean that if I (or you) will be able to get away with it if I (or you) try the same thing. Now doing the speed limit will guarantee you will not get a ticket and it is not chance then to get a ticket or not. Those that got away with not prepping the surfaces properly ARE lucky if they have no problems. Do it the right way & be safe. That was a bad example but let's not start a speeding topic here.

Says right there, this is what we recommend & this is what we have gotten away with. Big difference between those two.

hahah…But, what is the most successful MHG out there? I have heard that the Cometic is the most reliable of all (stupid rivet or not). And they are not as pricy as the HKS.

i hear where you are coming from tony. very good points made about the ra, i totally agree.
most successful mhg? dunno. dont want to get into why headgaskets let go but i have never heard of a hks mhg failure. i didnt know how much the cometic costs, i quit worrying about expense at this point, only makes me depressed haha.

dont want to hi jack thread but, what is the best MHG out there, not really concerning price. Is the HKS Stopper Type the best sealing for power wise or is the cometic just as good?
