NA is Gay, as are the Diffs from the NA... at least, when used in a turbo car.

I dont care who you are or where you are from; Turbo cars like more gear. the Taller the gear (numerically smaller), the more load it places on the engine. the more load it places on the engine, the more exhaust energy the engine creates. the more exhaust energy the engine creates, the more shaft RPM the turbo will make. the more shaft RPM the turbo makes, the better.

Plus, the fact that you blow right past the meaty part of the torque curve and have to shift, the worse off you are. since youll be shifting at least twice to get to 70mph, ill only have to shift once. that means you spend TWICE as much time with ZERO ft/lb of torque to your wheels than i do. so, you Lose.

NA diff's can die in a fire as far as im concerned. the more gear ive got, the faster i can go. how do you EVER expect to stomp a MKIV's face into the dirt if you top out at 120 mph?!

First off they dont top out at 120.... Second off, who is going to race to 70mph? you go to 75 and your just shifting to 3 and someone with an N/A rear end will pass you. I guess the only time shifting would make a difference is down the 1/4 mile where a 3.7 might be able to finish in 4th while a 4.3 will have to shift to 5th. But it all depends on how much power you have cause.y ou might still shift to 5th with the 3.7.

And also, "the fact that you blow right past the meaty part of the torque curve". If you can blow through any part means that you are going faster. You also blow through the turbo lagg part of the torque curve. The only way Ill be convinced is if another supra with similar beats me.

well, i guarantee you that a 4.30 equipped 7M powered car with an R154 will NEVER do 143mph at the top of 4th gear. this is the point im getting at. and ALOT Of people only race to 70mph... stop light to stop light? Impromptu stop light digs man... not Everyone wants to do 90+mph in the middle of City limits, regardless of how little traffic there is. The fact that someone with a 4.30 equipped car WILL shift sooner and more often than me means they will get owned, all else equal.

and if you blow past the meaty part of the torque curve, that means you spend More tiem shifting sooner and Less time harnessing the precious torque that youve spent so much time, effort and money trying to produce. Gears are for Supercharged cars and All-motor cars with Big tires. when you only have a 24" tall tire, it doesnt take much to blow it away, let alone top out any given gear sooner.

Like i said, shorter gears mean that you will spend more time with ZERO Power to your wheels than the guy w/ longer gears. you spend less time accelerating and using the torque that your engine produces. therefore, all else being equal, you WILL GET OWNED. end of discussion

shifting does not necisarily mean you will get owned. And "gears" are not only of supercharged or all motor cars. Its not about having the highest or lowest gearing, you have to have the RIGHT gearing. With out knowing all the specs i cannot say which one would be fastest. A stock mkiii turbo with either 3.7 or 3.9 will trap at 90 something mph in the quart mile. correct me if im wrong but isnt that the begging of 4th. so with a 4.3 on stock mkiii will be at the end of 4th, have made the same number of shifts and most likely win because it is ending in the meaty part of the torque curve.

oh and in a race to only 55-60mph, a 4.3 would own cause they would shift the same amount of times and spend more time in the meaty part of the curve.

well, that depends. if you get a good launch, you can cross the eyes at the top of 3rd with a 3.73, im pretty sure. and with a stock MK3, or at least stock cams... there is no meat to the torque curve in the top end, so it would be able to pull as hard as it did closer to 4000rpm.

and an R154 car, stock rev limit with a 3.73 can hit 62 mph at the top of 2nd. all else the same, and 4.30 gears, you will need to shift into 3rd to get past 60mph. there is a REASON the turbo cars never came with gears as deep as 4.30's. There is a method to this madness.

If toyota could have improved their 0-60mph times and 1/4 mile times by simply using an off-the-shelf 4.30 LSD from their "Sport" package rather than redesign a diff in late 88 for a 3.73 gear, dont you think they would have? if it was possible to Save money AND Improve the car's performance, it would have been a win-win situation, hands down. Toyota would have done it, turbo cars would be faster with deep gears, the law of physics would cease to exist and we wouldnt be having this civil discourse ;)

But toyota had to keep in mind drivability and gas milage. they did not produce a drag car. At 3400+ pounds they were not all that concerned with 60ft and 1/4 mile times. depending on what you are racing to, a certain speed or a distance like a 1/4 mile there are situations that each ratio may be best. If a r154 with 3.7 rear raced a 4.3 rear to 65, the 4.3 will win. And im still not convinced that a split second shift will make or break a race. I think the higher gear will give enough acceleration to make up for it.

there is NO way... NOOOooo way that you can try to tell me that Toyota's Flagship sports car/GT car/Luxury car meant nothing to them or the buying public when it comes to acceleration and performance figures. The most defining things that magazines compare are 0 to 60 times and 1/4 mile performance. If any GT or performance car doesnt turn in good 0-60 or 1/4 mile times, they are shit on. If this car was purely a luxury car or economy car, i can see the claim that accleration/performance is not on the collective mind of the OEM's when designing a car. but, that would be first and foremost when it comes to the Supra... so the gear change wouldnt have been based solely on fuel economy or drivability. this is a performance car first, luxury car second and fuel economy 3rd. especially since the Lexus division debuted in 1989 and toyota could focus the engineering of the supra to be more performance and less luxury.

btw, i do admit, youre car is done up quite nicely. looks great ;)

thanks man. ur car is quite nice to. and we could argue about this forever since its one statement at a time and posted on a forum.

Its true that toyota had 60ft and 1/4 mile times in mind. but if you drove with a 4.3 youd see why they wouldnt want the 4.3 in a turbo. In stop and go trafic it can be frustrating. To tell you the truth I cant say that the 4.3 is faster when considering shift and power curves. I just know it pulls hard, and have heard other say the same about the 4.3. I know how to drive my car so I keep it within a good power range. Too bad your soo far away or we could test our theories. Ill have to go kill empera next time I see him to see, lol jk

Go the 505's Flub!

back on topic I run 4.10's with the tall 5th in the Tremec TKO it will give 213 mph @ 8000. sort of best of both worlds as 1st is much the same as stock.

I've got a r154 and the 4.3 diff with around 300hp (soon to be at or above 400hp) and that 4.3 diff is quick as hell... all I know is that my 2nd to 3rd shift will spin tires (not chirp, but spin) with my rps stgIII clutch and 3200lb pressure plate... but I would like to have the stock diff back in it for gas mileage...
