Updated: 20:40, Saturday September 15, 2007
A helicopter that crashed in rural Scotland today was registered to rally driver Colin McRae, it has been revealed.
Strathclyde Police said there were no survivors after the aircraft came down near Lanark this afternoon.

It is not known whether the former world rally champion, who has a pilot's licence, was on board.

Police have said extensive damage was done to the twin squirrel helicopter and they were not immediately able to confirm how many people had been travelling in the craft.

There will be no formal identification of any victims this evening.

The air accident investigation team are en route to establish the cause of the crash.

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that its own helicopter was despatched to the scene along with three ambulance crews and units from Strathclyde Fire Brigade.

Sky Correspondent James Matthews said: "My understanding is that the helicopter involved is registered to Colin McRae, the former world rally champion former world rally champion.

"He lives on an estate where this crash took place, the Jervis Wood estate just outside Lanark in the central belt of Scotland.

"All police will say it that they are in touch with the family to try to establish the identity of those on board the helicopter."

Wow, That's horrible news, 5 year old son too... so sad.

Wow, this is a total shock, I still am trying to comprehend it. Plus, it's one thing for Colin and his friend whom I'm assuming was an adult as well, but the kids man...that just...I can't really describe it, it just always hits me harder when kids are involved.

Like others have said...RIP to all onboard, and may you tear up the dirt above us Colin.

When I saw this I thought it was rally, I never would've thought it would be this. I watched him when Speed channel played WRC rally stages and really enjoyed him, he was a good one.

RIP

It's not been 100% confirmed, but i reckon it will be. This came as a real shock to me when i saw it on ITV news last night. Whats most upsetting is that we've now lost our two best drivers ever. First, Richard Burns in 2005, and now Colin McRae....end of an era :'(
