works ok on some stuff, but remember it uses arc welding type heat, so its not ecu frendly... it will toast low voltage electronic circuits

It's a POS, for a living I install Pro audio (as in arena, church, concert sound systems) So a lot of my job is soldering. Well my dad thought it would be a good gift for Christmas, so I tried it out on some wires and different stuff I had around as scrap. I was not impressed. All it does is create a "short" between the 2 prongs that are about a fingernail thickness apart. So the only part that gets "hot" is that very small space between the 2 prongs, not enough heat to make a proper connection, not even close.

I keep it in with my work tools just to show others how crappy it is.

A normal iron once heated, is way faster.

It works for small jobs, but you have to know how to work it well and if you are too rough, you will split the tip like I did. I work with electronics and soldering at work a bit, and I must say that a real solder iron or especially a solder rework station is much, much better. Multiples.

i have no experience with the cold heat iron, however:

i love my butane powered soldering iron from radioshack. (one of the reviews says the solderint tip doesnt work too well, but i have had no problems with it, i guess that duded doesnt know how to solder?) adjustable heat settings, and comes with a torch tip. it kicks ass. :) i also have regular 20w, and 30w irons and a 200/260w gun. :)

here's the butane one i have, it's awesome for working on the car, just dont work near gas!

Its junk!

Won't solder any thing much over phone cable size wire.

Great for the junk drawer at home, but thats about it.
WOW Jon you solder your junk drawer with it I'm impressed and gonna buy one now ;)!

Typical solder melts at 550F, anything above that burns the flux, and cause's the prescious metals to burn off of a soldering iron tip. I've seen this cheap tool on TV also but it seems more like a tool for burning wood than soldering.
having the right tools is very important. I wouldnt wanna work on a car with $5.99 socket set made from pot metal.

I love my Weller Soldering Station
Theres never enough time to do it right the first time
BUT theres always enough time to do it right the second time.

Yeah, I usually use 550-650. The kids I work with like to crank it as high as it will go, to melt it faster. You can't teach or tell them anything... they know it all!

At work they have the really nice Pace Solder Re-Work stations and they kick ass. Weller makes some great products, too. It's too bad people don't treat the equipment as if it were their own.

Yeah those do work well. I work with a guy that only uses a butane iron. His cost some change though, I've just got a small butane iron w/ torch for doing stuff where I can't get power for my iron station and heat gun.
