I know K&N makes a kit to change the end of the factory intake to an coned open air filter element but I'm not sure if that's what your looking for or if your wanting something "prettier" looking than the factory air intake.

Yes, the OEM is cold air.
But it has drawbacks of being slightly restrictive,
both the inlet into the filter chamber,
and then from under the filter into the AFM.

Both GReddy, and HKS used to make filter kits for the 7M,
but they were open to heat from the radiator.

Look at this guy's custom cold air intake.

http://rides.sportcompactcarweb.com/ride/1007534/texas-cressida/1989/toyota/cressida/index.html

It has a K&N inside a custom fiberglass housing,
that draws air from ahead of the radiator.

Do NOT just buy K&N's repalcement ellement !
It has 1/4 of the ellement area of the stock filter.
I ordered one in, without knowing what it looked like.
It killed my top-end by almost 20 mph !
So I now use it as a parts tray.......

So then it's better to just drop a K&N replacement air filter into the factory air intake box and leave her be? Sounds like a plan. Just wish it was nicer looking.

My car is turbo and I have a KN filter, works good, however I too was thinking of placing the KN filter back into the stock filter housing to keep radiant heat from it, but I would like to somehow 'snorkle' some fresh-cool-outside air directly towards the filter.

I guess you missed this about NOT using the K&N direct replacement for the Supra.....

i run a k&n on mine, have done for 5 years. its fine

Same here..........
Never a problem if they are maintained correctly.
You can ruin them by using a hose to bow the dirt out.
It ruins the cotton gause.
Then they pass dust.........

You guys didn't even look at the test data :3d_frown:

It's not going to "appear" to be any problem...do an oil analysis and see how much silicon shows up. Of course a fine abrasive inside the motor should not be a problem either when you look at it from the outside ;)

That god damn silly cone.

Same reason I'm switching from a Blitz stainless steel mesh filter back to the factory air box and paper filter.

I knew there was a reason why I steer my customers toward AC delco filters. Thanks for the link!!!!!!!

Some will say " I have used aftermarket brand X for XXX # years with no problems.

LOL

On a side note, I've seen paper filters collapse and get partially sucked towards the compressor housing on diesels, but that is a rare occurance and it probably was soaking wet when it happened!!!

Holy shit......"rips out Blitz filter and throws it far far away from his supra"...... What a waste of $200....

Sure was....
I took the POS undersize K&N out, put a paper ellement back in,
and got the top end back.
If K&N had made the ellement as large as the stock replacement,
there would not have been a problem.
But they chose to just make something cheap, that just would fit.

TRD makes a drop-in ellement,
that has as much filter area as the stock unit.
But they are very expensive.......

Like I said George, you're not going to beat an AC Delco for filtering ability. And, it is going to flow plenty well enough for a NA motor.

"This illustrates the apparent trade-offs between optimizing a filter for dirt capturing ability and maximum airflow." I read about half of it jdub. And this is what I gathered from it. So it all comes down to, do you wanna have more fun, or do you want the engine to enjoy better health. Frankly, this isn't my daily driver and the engine already has 150,000 on her. I figure after installing my newly remastered head, which will increase compression, this will further enhance stress on the bottom end of the engine having to cope with the regained compression and strength of the top end, which means I'll have rod knock in no time. I'm hoping that I'm wrong but somehow I doubt I am. So I plan to just stick a K&N in there for kicks and grins. Just to form my own opinion. I put the OE replacement K&N in my 03 Sierra and couldn't be happier with it.

Good for you man...I'm sure a NA motor needs all the additional flow you can get.

Might want to read the link Nick posted (#14) about drawing conclusions...it's dead on.

Regardless of what you "think", fine dust entering your motor is not good...no matter how you rationalize it. At least get an AEM dryflow filter and throw the K&N away...it's one of the worst air filters on the market. It flows well for a reason ;)

It is your motor. I just don't want the guys that want their engine to last to get the idea a K&N air filter is the way to go...it's not.
