Coil on Plug

Hey,

I am curious as to what coil on plug setups will fit the 7mgte.

I tried searching but all that came up was the 2jzge is300 COP. Besides that, are there any others that will fit? They do not have to be complient with the stock ignition setup, I am just looking for coils that will physically fit the 7mgte and can produce a good spark for 500+hp

Thanks.

My setup used two stock ignitors and 1jz coils:

Thanks for the replies.

I am using a Ford EDIS-6 ignition module so I will have to look into how I can incorporate the 1jz coils.

Three are COP and three are standard coil with plug wire meaning that the three cylinders with plug wires wont have as hot of a spark as the three with COP because of the resistance through the plug wire.

At least that is what I am thinking.

I would prefer individual coils for each cylinder.

That does not affect the spark like your thinking, I'm over 500 .....NP. Im going to add an HKS DLI this summer maybe, but it seems fine as is.

There is a reason that DIS has replaced DLI. It has to do with coil saturation and long life. There is still a piece connecting the coil to the plug on a DIS. I am not trying to talk you out trying it, just wondering.

I just like the mod he came up with.

Why not just use 2quicks mod?

The reason I wouldn't run tookwik's mod is the same reason I don't have the 1jz coils on my 7m anymore, neither one is actually a performance upgrade to the stock coilpack. It's cool that those fit easily, it was a good find, but your really just substituting stock coils from an engine that wasn't even turbocharged. The way I have it now cost only the price of a set of spark plug wires, it's even easier to get to the spark plugs, and requires no extra wiring at all, just making the wire set from a universal plug wire set with straight boots. I am going to get an ignition voltage tester and see what actually does give the best spark when I get some time.

Here's what I'm going to be testing next on the 7m ignitor.
These are only $32 each brand new from Summit, and they are rated at 40kv. The primary resistance is the same as the stock coilpack, so the ignitor should not have a problem driving these.

The 2jzgte coils are easier to get and from what i was told will replace the 1jzgte coils. coil over plug isnt good for high hp applications but for mid and low hp they are good cause you dont have to replace wires.

I just came in from the garage, I did some (slightly unscientific) tests on a stock coilpack, a 1jz coil, and the Summit coils, using a stock 7mgte ignitor. For the stock and summit coils I used the Accelle 8.8mm wires I made up to relocate the stock coilpack, I connected one coil output to a plug, and the other to the tester. I pulled out the cps, disconnected the fuel pump, turned on the ignition, and then turned the cps by hand to make the ignitor fire the coil.

Stock coilpack:
Made a nice spark with the tester at the 40kv+ mark!
At 30kv it made a hot spark that sounded good too. That stock coilpack is no joke.

1jz coil:
Spark was a little weaker then the 7m coilpack. It would not jump the gap when it was set above 35kv. The spark sounded and looked ok when the gap was smaller. I'll try this test with a 1jz ignitor and see if it is better. Maybe the dwell is different from the 1jz ignitor specifically for the 1jz coils?

Summit coil:
I couldn't get a good test on it because the damn spark was jumping to anything within arms distance :biglaugh: Well not literally, but since my wire set didn't have the correct boots for the coil, it was wanting to jump between the two posts to get to the plug, rather then jump the gap in the tester. I used some rubber hose to make some insulators and I did get it to hit the 40kv+ mark. With a smaller gap the spark did look and sound as intense as the stock coilpack. I would not be able to say for sure it was better then the stock one at this point, but it was not worse. I'll need to finish making a wire set for it and then test it again. I think these coils may turn out to work very well.

The stock coilpack definitly does get the job done. Tookwik's mod, while it’s not necessary an upgrade, it don’t believe it’s a downgrade either, and you get the bonus of the cleanliness/efficiency. I wish someone could get some raw numbers on the IS300 coilpacks compared to ours. I think they might be the same specs, just smaller with today’s technology (well late 90s technology). One thing I know for sure though, there are many IS300 down here in Miami from my friends shop that run 500 to 700 rwhp daily on these stock coilpacks with just a HKS DLI or similar. Can igniters make a difference? I wonder if for example the 7M igniter could be that much different than the 2jzge igniter?

Keep us updated Aaron

I would like to try one of the IS300 coils out and compare. It is possible that the spark is as good as the stock coilpack. If people have run 700hp with those then they must be pretty good. I would also like to do a more controlled test with a better way of measuring output voltage and current.
