Is that true about rodknock being caused by running slightly rich for extended periods of time?
There are a few variables. Running rich dilutes the motor oil. If you dont change it enough, then yes. Most rodknock is a spun bearing. A spun bearing is usually contamination that sticks to the crankshaft and causes the tab to break off as the crank pulls the bearing.

It seems you were implying that a fault in the knock sensor circuit would only set a code and illuminate the MIL without any correction being applied to timing. In other words an open or short in the knock sensor circuit does nothing other than report a fault. Is that what you were stating? If so the books say you're wrong.
Which book? Toyota's engine control systems? I dont have it here. If you do, then dont hog the info for yourself:icon_bigg . Toyota did have a code 53 for no knock control, I dont remember when it started or stopped. Well it probably stopped with OBDII. 53 was there is knock, and it wasnt being corrected. in other words, continuous knock.

I can't remember the last time I read a car magazine, shitty or not.
You aren't missing anything.

Nick: I have several TCCS books. The one I was referencing is the Toyota TCCS Technical Training Manual. I didn't feel I was hogging the information. It's why the original post was in such detail ;)

I might pick at a copy of Road and Track on occassion in the barber shop or dentist but I have to be pretty bored to do it. I never look at the import rags. Well, except for the covers (if you get my drift)

Johnathan: Nick is right on. Fuel dilution is bad news. There are also other bad things that can happen if the engine continues to be operated any time the lambda loop isn't in control. It's why a cheap A/F gage is a good thing to have even if it's only a light show. Either that or check the O2 sensor every time you do an oil change. Also check for codes at that time as some can be set without illuminating the MIL. It's good practice to check certain things once in a while even if the car seems to be running OK.

I have had that code. I am going to say something but at the end it cost me a slot rodknock. How? easy.....I drove the car like that for months beating on it and everything and never changed the oil. The richen mixture cut down the oil which I learned from one of the threads turns your oil to kerosen. WHICH IS A NO NO FOR OUR MOTORS:3d_frown: From what I read the kersoen to mixture destroys our bearings. I feel like such an ass:nono: even telling to guys how dum I was :nono: And it was already a fresh motor:3d_frown:

I like to read new car news also. I just don't think the youth on this board should take things like Super Street as gospel. Just the same as Hot Rod for the domestics.

Anyway, a great deal of barbers always have womens mags.:rant2:
