Clutch question

We put in a new ACT clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, pilot bushing, and throwout bearing/fork into a 91 MKIII 1JZGTE motor. When the clutch is pushed in, it seems to work fine (little chatter). When the clutch is let out, there is a slight metal on metal sound, or banging. Is there an adjustment I am missing? I am in the process of pulling the transmission to look at all of it (kinda hoped to avoid doing this by replacing everything before the motor was put in).

Is it a 6puck? Are you just letting it out around 1000 rpms or so?

6 pucks are easier to start off with no chatter at 1500+ rpms or it's going to chatter and sort of buck.

are you shure you correctly installed the C-clip on the pressureplate side of the throwout-bearing?
Are you shure the clutch disk is installed the correct way?

Good luck!

This is just to update you folks on what I found on the noise. We removed the transmission (l was hoping to avoid that) and found that the new ACT clutch was defective. The center spline was now "floating" in the spring hub assembly. We sent it back to Driftmotion, and are hoping the manufacturer will stand behind it. It didn't even make it through the break in period, as it made noise right from the beginning.

thats typical for inserting the disc the incorrect way, But a good thing you found it all out! Im using ACT clutch disc with the hardest pressureplate they got, and has been working excellent for two years of racing abuse.

And here I thought just reading "pressure plate side" and "flywheel side" on the clutch before installation would have worked for me. Who would have guessed they had it backward?

Of course, it does not mean you actually inserted it the wrong way. But if you take a good look at the way the springs are oriented vs. the rotation direction of the Engine and Transmission, Then you will get a good answer for a correct installation.
The springs are supposed to be compressed when clutch pedal is disengaged, giving the transmission a "soft start" and OEM "feeling" when shifting.
I have actually seen even incorrect OEM marked clutch discs before, that would throw the dust from the disc INTO the center of the flywheel, instead of out, if installed the way the print said.... plus the center spline would work itself loose, and some parts of it would be OUTSIDE the input shaft :p

But as I said before, it could be just a manufacturing-error..... Everyone can make mistakes :)
