Clutch or Diff related?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to diagnose if i have a slipping clutch. I've replaced my clutch just under 12 months ago and haven't really given it much grief.

Most people say go up a hill in higher gears and you should see it slip. Mine grips fine in this circumstance.

My problem is in 2nd gear, when i give it WOT from about 40kph to redline. The clutch acts like it's slipping, racing to about 90kph on the dial, but probably only going about 60-70kph in reality.

I'm going to check the clutch freeplay on the weekend, but i'm pretty sure it's within spec.

Could it be the clutch or perhaps even a diff related problem? I'm still on the stock clutch pack that's traveled 160xxxkms.

I come from a land down under
5th gear at a low road speed (75kph) and stand on the throttle

if it's slipping this will show it.

The speedo won't rise but the tacho will of it's clutch slip.

If the speedo is rising but road speed isn't the bonded rear driveshaft section may have failed.

It passes that test IJ. I'll take it for a spin now just to reconfirm.

Are you referring to the driveshaft centre holder? Or towards the diff area, like the U Joints?

How would one not hear, feel, or smell it if that tube was spinning in the other tube!!!??? It shook my car something fierce and I'd imagine that rubber bonding would smoke like a sob!

Well, i just gave the car a flogging.

No slip in any gear.

I went up a hill, 80kph in 5th fine.

4th gear from 2kph to 60kph, all fine.

Booting it around in 2nd gear, and it was perfect.

Could i be feeling the "wheel hop" that i've read about?

wheel hop is when you break the rear tires loose and it shakes the car but once you hook up it goes away. wheel hope is very hard on the suspension and very noticeable on wet roads!

Thanks for that!

Definitely isn't that then. Some people on another forum think it's jsut wheelspin. It could be, due to a combination of stiff shocks, power, poly bushings throughout and uneven roads.

Sorry for the thread jack here; but, I've been getting a 'Burning Rubber' type smell when I come to a stop light or when I put the car in the garage. It's worse after I get through boosting.

The car is also starting to shake horribly during normal take off's. It feels like puck clutch chatter; but, I'm running a Stage II Full Disk. ~5k on it and it was properly broke in.

I'll climb under the car tomorrow and look at the drive shaft.

I'm looking for mis-aligned u-joints correct?
