Clutch Fan Upgrade

Need a new one as mine has freeplay both hot and cold. So I'm wondering if there are any choices besides stock?

I would like to keep it belt driven for simplicity and "stock look", so electrical is out of the option.


Tried searching but only got LS400 clutch for the 2JZ and Taurus Electrical fan. :/

New stock one here.

Don't get the parts store one, they have one to cover NA and Turbo and it's tiny. Stock turbo fanclutch is far larger and has more cooling fins. It may be cheaper than a stock one from the dealer, but the original lasted 20 years...

Wait im interested in this too. I got a replcament clutch fan from A2 Automotive Express when they were around. Are you saying I should get a Toyota OEM Turbo fan clutch?

toyo tacoma clutch here. Its green and a bit longer, puts the fan a tiny bit closer to the radiator and kicks in sooner (175F comes to mind).

maybe try a search or two? a properly shrouded working cltuch fan and cooling system work perfectly. Only true upgrade is the radiator.

Theres a thread on here comparing the three clutches as well. You could rebuild your stocker with different weight oils to cause different degrees of lock up too ( not temp). JJ hit on this a few times...

Just pop open the fan clutch and replace/upgrade the silicone.

*The Toyota dealer says there are three types of viscous fan clutch silicone. They are rated at 3000 CST, 6000 CST, and 10,000 CST. (the higher the Cst rating, the higher the viscosity (THICKER fluid) All priced the same. The only reference to this stuff that the Toyota parts jock could find, was a TSB from 1975 specifying the fill procedure for the clutches of that year, The 3,000 Cst. was for all Toyotas except for the Celica (the only “sporty” car they offered in 1975), which got 6,000 Cst. The 10,000 Cst. was not assigned an application by the TSB. He guessed maybe the Land Cruiser but didn't really know. Anyway, the part numbers are 08816-03001, 08816-06001, and 08816-10001, respectively. (Each bottle is 18mL; you will probably need 2-3 bottles depending on your specific fan clutch)

I'm liking this. V6 Tundra clutch idea. As you can get it at an autoparts store. :)

I've always thought the spec was 6000...lol

I guess I'll get the 3000, and poke around for your rebuild/refil/test. :)
