So a little history, purchased my car and about 2 weeks of driving the transmission one day made this awful noise, sounded literally like somebody shot a shotgun off underneath my car. So I checked it out, and found nothing. About a week later, the same damn noise.

Well today I made a right hand turn and hear a click or clank in the tranny area (not 100% though). It went clank clank and so on for about 10 seconds tops. I pull over and start trying to figure out whats going on. Well when I attempted to shift into 4th, it wouldnt go in (I DID NOT TRY FORCING IT). I made left hand turn and magically my fourth gear came back and my tranny is shifting fine again.

Its a 5sp conversion (r154 to 7mgte).

Anybody had this problem, or know maybe what could fix it???

Edit: And when I down shift there is this nasty vibration right under my center console now.

This video is from inside my car on/next to my center console. The noise/vibration is underneath it.

Ive checked for metal and there wasnt any, BUT I was not extremly thorough. Im more inclined to think its the driveshaft (stock). Im thinking about getting a single piece driveshaft.

Any other ideas?

Driveshaft?

Same thing that came to my mind....

Now im not 100% sure but i have been told to mark the driveshaft and out it in the same way it came out. Not sure why or for what reason's or what it would cause

but a friend of mine put in a R-154 on his 7mge and has the same problems. And he did not mark his Drive shaft he upgraded to another one.

The sound is coming only on de-celeration it sounds like to me, correct?

My friend had this sound, it turned out to be his syncros I believe. Thats what he told me anyways. I'm sure one of the knowledgable guys will post for sure, but wouldn't it make the sound pretty much always if it were the driveshaft?

Ya, I wouldn't drive at all till I figured out that sound thats for sure. No good can come from using the car more until it's corrected.

I was told possible leaf springs or drive shaft

It does it when the clutch is pressed in, or when i put it in nuetral and let it decel that way.

Hmmm The driveshaft isn't locked (meaning you can turn it by hand) when the car is not in gear. Seems like to me its your D.S But thats just puttin 2 and 2 together ill shut up now lol.

i had a noise some what like that, and it turned out to be the support bearing on my supra, it was a 5spd N/A, the bearing was shot, and kept rubbing on the metal, it did it even worse when taking turns, i would take the shaft out and inspect it.

I personally think It's your driveshaft carrier bearing because of the squeaking (unless that's just your camera). Also, due to the fact that it happens while in neutral I really don't think It's your tranny. If it were my car, I'd start at checking the carrier bearing, then your U's.

I'll be the one to point out you dont have leaf springs. As far as syncros go, to my knowledge unless one were to split apart they are only going to give you problems when your trying to engage a gear. I cant imagine the decel noice being caused by a syncro. If it were to break apart it would end up in your gears and that would be the end of your trans. which isnt the case.

Check your U-joints, carrier bearing and drive shaft. Theres a good write up Ian did about the driveshafts floating around here. Also confirm the noise is not coming from your rear end.

ok first.. leafspring?!? *scratches head*

and second that sounds like a definate d shaft, VERY easy to diagnose, jack it up and check it, there should be NO play in the joints and VERY MINIMAL in the c bearing. a single piece steel shaft made from .065 or .083 (your choice) wall d.o.m. tubing will run you bout 310-320 from my shop. shipped. screw the old million pound 2 piece

^^^^^ Gotta agree with the man here, I have never regretted going 1 piece lightweight.

ya, the aluminum are lighter, but in my profesional opinion, they are more of a bragging right. 3x.065 wall tubing is strong enough for MOST of our applications, but .083 is a little thicker and of course will handle a little more.

aluminum is good for an all out, stripped out race car. i.e no interior, aluminum fly wheel, ect. but in a hardcore road race car, i wuld rather have steel. the petty miniscule amount of weight you save with aluminum (rotational or static) is just plain not worth it.
