Just came down to availability in the sizes I'm using!
My crank has extensive work and after a miscalculation on my part I ended up with chatter marks in 2 rod journals so had to cut the Rod journals 30 under!
Genuine Group A Bearing sets are fully grooved but I'm not sure I agree with the reasoning behind doing this as it removes surface area from the loaded side of the bearing.
Most available bearing sets are only upper grooved. (Toga's being the exception)
My Crank shop while not bagging them outright suggested to NOT use ACL bearing in a maximum effort performance build as they tend to flake (PITA as ACL are close by)
Ok this will be a little "simple" but more area means less PSI force on the bearing.
Your crank rides on a film of Oil and should never touch the bearing surface while running.
If you have less area the PSI is higher and even with a good film/pressure you can end up wiping/smearing the bearing surface (think of soft putty and pushing it with a finger)
This also happens at High RPM/Loads if the bearing clearences are set too tight!
I wiped a set of NDC Rod bearings but it was during sustained 8000 rpm and 30 psi boost runs with tight clearences!
Only just running the new motor in so it hasn't been abused yet!
The NDC's in the motor before the 8k/30psi effort looked good when pulled!
(I had built it looser and made the mistake of changing my specs for the next build)
You might want to compare prices there and see if it's any cheaper to buy em in NDC boxes, might be cheaper to buy em in Clevite boxes !
(it's the other way around here but we're closer to Japan than the USA)
I can't find NDC boxed as NDC in california. I checked Kragen and a few other places. I just got the Clevite's, paid $110 for main and rod bearings. Seemed fair to me.
