i am currently getting parts together in order to do some work. i am doing the head gasket among other things. but what i was wanting to know was what is there under the hood that i can remove? like stuff thats not really needed. i have read bout the egr and stuff like that. but just wondering what all there was? like if there was a list anyone made up? i just figure while i am in there with the head off and putting new components on i would tear out some of the old crap. also has anyone out there taken out their hood padding stuff? i know of a few ppl who did it but i wasnt sure if it would mess up the paint from getting too hot. but if anyone has some knowledge on this subject that would be great- thanks

For me i removed my manifold supporting brackets and turbo support bracket, vented the fuel tank and removed the charcoal canister, EGR.

I would like to relocate the PS resevoir to somewhere discrete and i relocated the overflow tank to next to the battery. I also would like to move the air filter into the headlight area.

Those support brackets aren't there for show, the yhelp take the weight of that cast mani and turbo, as if you've ever removed oone you know it weights a hell of a lot, and it's hanging off 7 studs in aluminium... so it can use all the help it gets. That blanket attached to the hood has been said to fall off in the event of an engine fire, smothering the flames. It does this because the clips holding it on are plastic and they melt off when the fire touches them, releasing the blanket.
If you really want to clean up the underhood area, apart from removing the egr, you can remove some vaccuum lines, cruise control if you don't care about it, relocate battery to trunk, relocate fusebox to glove box, along with the igniter if you wanted, run pcv to a catchcan rather than it's current setup. Just look under there, take your time and it'll be fun.

I didn't do it personally, tho i have seen the results of it done, sorry I wasn't clearer about that. You would indeed have to lengthen some wires, and besides it's not really in the way as it is. You'd only move it if you wanted an extremely empty area under there.

i've been trying to map out the different components under the hood for this exact reason...then finding out what they do and how I can remove them. The EGR, CC, A/C, PS, and washer lines are already gone. I've been pondering the ISC, since I don't have any load but the fan (replacing with electrics) and maybe a little loud music here and there. When I do an FFIM conversion the battery is going to be relocated, and the fusebox is going where the battery was. Ultimately I would like to have all the moveable relays and the fusebox put into one big vented box where the battery is, but I don't know if that's fesable, and I'm scared enough of wires as it is.

And I could swear I've seen this done before, but has anybody ever converted the 7M to something along the lines of a 1J ignition system...being individual instead of grouped together? Or would I just be better off relocating the coil pack like Duane has?

Bigaaron had a 1j setup. I spoke to him via PM & he said he returned to the original 7M ignition system. I'm looking into it, but unless I get some sort of assistance, I don't think I'll get far. Electrical work isn't my cup of tea.

I believe Ron R has individual coils from a mkiv in his 7mgte, i believe all he did was make a wiring harness that plugs up to the coils and then to the ignitor. I don't know exactly how he went about it, but he does have mkiv coils. I wonder how the indiviual coils hook up to the spak plugs... are there really short plug wires under them?

bump from the dead! thanks for searching though.

Ron R didn't use MKIV coils, plus he has a MoTec ECU. Therefore, COP is an option.

BigAaron ( www.driftmotion.com ) used 1JZ coils using a custom harness job, it's outlined on the website. Stock 7M ecu.

COP uses little boots for "wires".

get a 70 pound bowling ball, tie it to 8 fish hooks, and hang it from your lip. that's how the head on your poor car feels without those turbo support brackets, and manifold brackets. don't be surprised if you strip out all the bolt holes in your head...

Toyota like all car manufacturers intentionally waste a lot of money putting things on cars you don't really need. Take what you want.

Ron is running (or was since he is now gone 2J) a fully sequential ignition using six individual MKIV TT coil-on-plug fired by a GM 6-hannel igniter.

Ah... I thought i was right about the 2j coils, I've seen most of his videos on cardomain and also noticed in some shots of his engine. Thanks for chiming in Duane.
