toshi's are ok but make sure you get a nice long warranty and insurance with it! laptops are very easly rendered not cost effective for repair!

I would also recomend looking at asus stuff!

Don't. Get a decent laptop with a tablet input device. If you go with a tablet, you'll get a slow overpriced turd. You can get a much faster much cheaper laptop w/ a tablet input and come out way ahead of the game.

My engineering department said I needed a tablet PC. Bullshit, I went the way i described and am so much happier.

Yeah, don't get a tablet PC...they're novel but that's about it. If your handwriting is messy to begin with the tablet will just amplify its crappiness! In all honesty, you shouldn't bring a laptop to class anyways. There are far too many distractions (SM for one!) that get in the way of learning. I've had a laptop for years, and every class I bring it to I never pay attention. And now that I'm on the other side facing those open lids...it's kinda annoying ;)

If you're hard set for something portable, do as outofstep says, get a good laptop.

10/100 is 100mbit/s upload/download on a network
10/100/1000 is 1000mbit/s or 1Gb/s (also known as gigabit ethernet)

those speed differences will really only be noticable on a network and file sharing..of course your internet connection goes through it but an internet connection is only like 3-8mbit/s

Oh and i voted Linux but its harder to get used to if you're a windows person. Linux is just awesome though.

I personally wouldn't get a tablet, though I like the idea of them. Whatever you do, stay away from Vista.

I think that after a few months Vista will be fine. But right when it comes out its gonna be like XP home was when it came out.. with no service packs or any fixes...it was horrible.

I wasn't even thinking about stability/security (which will always be a big issue too), more about how it's going to hinder what you can do with it and its cost. Vista is going to encourage DRM, which will keep you from using music/movies/etc. in the way you want. I've also heard they are going to all but kill support for OpenGL. When I get home I can look up the relevant articles.

I currently run Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows XP Pro. Out of those three I prefer OS X for everyday stuff.

I prefer Linux, but i use XP because im a gamer and i dont feel like messin around with all them windows emulators and stuff hah. If Vista gets rid of OpenGL they are going to lose a LOT of customers that do gaming.. a lot of games are OpenGL.

When I got my Mac OS X laptop it helped me stay much much more organized at college. :)

Vista:
- License issues: http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/12/2240214
- Vista cost (more company based): http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/05/1422224
- Vista will collapse the internet!! (heh): http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/09/07/1441204
- Vista startup sound mandatory? http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/08/31/2347201
- No full HD playback for 32-bit CPUs on Vista: http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/08/24/1325214
- Possible dual-booting issues with Vista: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/04/27/2219258
- Vista firewall to be crippled: http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/04/26/1321207
- Vista and OpenGL (though I've heard there will be ways for full OpenGL to work, just do some Google searches on this): http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/08/06/177251

These are just some of the reasons why I'm boycotting Vista. Also, do some searches on Vista DRM. Grrrr, DRM is evil. :icon_evil

I have a dell with a core2 duo. Basicly what I got with the laptop for 1.5k would have ran me over 3k on a tablet. But even then the tablet would have had a lower resolution and a vid card as fast as mine isnt even offered in any tablet pc. Of course the OS is microsoft. Not exactly all that many compilers, engineering programs, math manipulation programs, etc for non-microsoft OSes. Im sure there are some, but none taught at university.

Linux is not full of the programs that my University uses and teaches. In fact linux has a grand totaly of ZERO of the programs that I use. I'm not even going to bother trying to run anything through the buggy as shit WINE at 1/4 the speed it would run on the proper OS.

The dude want's something for college classes, not something just to say "wow, i gots the unix jr." I mean it's nice the people suggest mac and linux. But they arent listening to the needs of the user.

That would be because your college decided to pick applications that only ran on Windows. My university uses a lot of Linux/Unix apps.

Saying that Mac or Linux won't meet the needs of a college student is not generally true. It depends on what your major is and what your classes require. If your classes are operating system independent (which they really should be) then it shouldn't matter what OS you choose, just pick whichever one works best for you.

As a Computer Science major I have found that I have needed lots of knowledge of Linux for my classes, but having a personal computer than runs Linux is not required. And for most things my Mac has been better suited than my Windows laptop I had before.

Not bustin ya but many people get the wrong impression on linux or mac. so hopefully this will clear up some things

if you are thinking of programs that use Direct X or similar then there is Crossover office (http://www.codeweavers.com/) or Point2Play (http://www.transgaming.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=2&meid=-1) Both of these programs work pretty good and they have support as they get paid for sellin crossover and monthly payment for point2play

Oh and crossover office has full support for office 2003 i think.
