He was in a relationship with her for a year and didnt know she was 16? I'd say that's a bit more than "kind of stupid".

If you're with a girl and she looks 18 and says she's 18 how often do you really verify that?

Interestingly enough, some former aquaintances of mine popped up. A lot of conviction dates are in the 01'-04' era. Which would put a lot of the offenders around eighteen to nineteen years old.
