Would you pay the extra $.75 for double the mpg? I know I would. I would pay the $5.19 here per gal, if I had a car that got more than 45mpg. That is almost double what I am getting in the altima (23-24mpg), although I do not drive like a grandma.

I say the same thing when people whine about diesel being more expensive.

Civic hybrid getting ~48mpg vs VW Beetle Diesel getting ~43mpg. Where's that double the mpg?

What? NO fair comparing against a hybrid?

How about 45mpg from a '90 Geo Metro?

Extra $0.75 nets you nothing unless you are comparing a V10 triton to a Powerstroke in an F350

I was refering to my current status, and MPG, not overall. I would personally pay the $0.75 increase per gal if I were to get double the mileage.

This is a list off of AOL of the best gas mileage new cars, and their mileages. First, I thought they would be much higher for some, especially the hybrids. And, it brought to mind a question. Why are there no American made cars on the list? Do we expect every other country to feel sorry for us and our gas prices, while our own car companies don't give a shit?

2-Seater: Smart Car for Two (33/41)
Mini-compact: Mini Cooper (28/37)
Sub-compact: Toyota Yaris (29/36)
Compact: Honda Civic Hybrid (40/45)
Mid-size: Toyota Prius (48/45)
Large: Honda Accord (22/31)
Small wagon: Honda Fit (28/34)
Mid-size wagon: VW Passat (21/29)

Sorry, but I dont see this list to be very economical :)
You see, you guys in US are missing a lot of smaller and more economical car's when compared to europe. But not only that, but most of manufacturers offer same cars like in europe and everywhere else, but just with bigger uneconomical engines. For example:
You'r able to buy BMW 5er in US with smallest engine of 2.8ltr, while in europe you can buy 5er with 2ltr engine and also 2.0ltr diesel ;)
Also such cars like Yaris are offered in europe with 1.0ltr engines, which get way more then 40mpg. Even the SMART has larger and more fuel consuming engine in US market :)

It's not that US manufacturers are ignoring the demand for small-ecofriendly cars, but its somewhat a tradition, a real american dream, to have a large car, with inadequately large engine. After some time I guess they will introduce some smaller or at least more eco-friendly cars, but for now... US manufacturers just see no real need in more eco-friendly cars while gas prices are still so low.

Either way, stop bitching about prices, you have one of the cheapest gas available in the world! :D

Just example:
Filling up supra in us - ~60usd
Filling up supra in Lithuania - ~130usd

See the difference? :D Oh, and average salary is somewhere around 1100usd per month in Lithuania. I bet average in us is near some 3k usd.

I point you back in the direction of the bluemotion Polo. The Motion gets 60, while the Civic gets (by your own admission) gets 48. So, that extra 0.75c that you're complaining about will get you 12 extra miles to each Gallon. I'm sorry, but how in hell can you not consider 0.75c for 12 miles extra driving a bargain? That saving will SERIOUSLY add up over the years

And funny you should mention the Geo, because the big bad Diesels have that those beat on economical used cars too - A tweaked (read raised boost with fuel pump modification to match) 1.9TDi 306 Peugeot will produce Circa 150BHP (about 3 times the power of a Metro), out handle the metro to hell and back, be more Practical and get.... 45MPG... city.

Is that extra .75c starting to look attractive yet?

Outhandle the Geo? I think not.

If I could keep up with tuned Supras in the twisties with a 3 cylinder geo metro, I think you're underrating them.

We also don't have either of the other cars you mentioned over here.

Oh, and I've gotten MUCH better than 45MPG out of a Geo Metro...

Costs me $1000 to buy the Geo Metro, and get ~45mpg (I've gotten better too, but let's face it - I used to floor that thing EVERYWHERE and get 45).

Over 1000 miles, that costs me about $1084.

Now, the BlueMotion Polo (which I can't get in the US) seems to cost ~$12000 pounds. That's about $24,000 US Dollars. I'm not even going to add in the import fees.

Over 1000 miles, that costs me about $24,080.

What about the long term? Let's say I beat the piss out of both cars for a quarter of a million miles. Assuming the difference between gas and diesel prices stay the same -

The Geo costs me about $22,000 in gas alone.
The Polo costs me about $19,800 in diesel alone.

A difference of $2,200. I'd have to drive 2.5 MILLION MILES to make up the difference in initial cost.

The point is, if you want a fuel efficient car, they are already out there, for dirt cheap. The '86-'89 Accords can be had for $500 apiece, running, and they get 35+ mpg city (I JUST sold mine for $900, and it was almost 100$ rebuilt). People want to complain about gas prices, but want to do nothing about it.

I spent $200 on a '78 Honda CX500. Will do 75mph all day long at 55-60mpg. That is a good ROI, imho. Costing me about $100 to fix it up and ensure everything is tip-top condition.
