This is a list off of AOL of the best gas mileage new cars, and their mileages. First, I thought they would be much higher for some, especially the hybrids. And, it brought to mind a question. Why are there no American made cars on the list? Do we expect every other country to feel sorry for us and our gas prices, while our own car companies don't give a shit?

2-Seater: Smart Car for Two (33/41)
Mini-compact: Mini Cooper (28/37)
Sub-compact: Toyota Yaris (29/36)
Compact: Honda Civic Hybrid (40/45)
Mid-size: Toyota Prius (48/45)
Large: Honda Accord (22/31)
Small wagon: Honda Fit (28/34)
Mid-size wagon: VW Passat (21/29)

Ford Fusion gets 20/29 estimated. I know some people who own them and they get better mileage than that. The list also neglects the Cobalt, the Focus, and a few other small, economical cars that get excellent gas mileage but nobody buys.

The EPA changed the basis for the mileage rating in 08, which lowered the rating across the board. Check out www.fueleconomy.gov for details on the change. You can see what the original ratings were vs the 08 method for some years/makes/models.

BTW, I've been coasting everywhere I go and light on the gas, and got 33.5 mpg on my last tank in my '95 Celica GT going from/to work (rated 26 hwy with '08 rating method). Woot! I won't drive my reborn Supra the same way. :naughty:

Bullshit. GM is working overtime to bring better mileage to the masses. Yes, the imports have the advantage right now, but give it another year or so.

33.5? really? I get 25 in my '94 GT in the city and ~26.5 hwy @ ~70mph. For the most part, I shift by 3000rpm with the occasional dropping gear to get around slower traffic.

This reminds me, I saw a Smart Car in person for the first time the other day... Why would you buy that again? Looks like ass, zero room, probably slow as hell. Gas mileage can be achieved with less homo cars with amenities and room, Smart car fails.

Messed up thing about em is that because they're 2 seaters... they classify as a "sports car"

You're also forgetting the complete lack of aerodynamics, it's a moving wall...

I'd rather be driving a Geo Metro hatchback that gets better gas milage, has more room, and isn't a rolling coffin...

No exaggeration, but I have to work for it. Very litle gas, check tire pressue every week , shift @ 2800 rpm, anticipate every stop light and coast into the reds, or better yet keep rolling until they turn green again. Somebody on 6gc.net claimed 36 and I thought bs, so I wanted to see how close I could get. I really don think I will make 35, but its been fun trying... :)

I have posted somewhere on here that I fully believe that the brake pedal cancels any effects of the gas pedal, therefor it is detrimental to gas mileage. If you leave one red light, and accelerate at a slower rate, then immediately stop accelerating as soon as you see that next light changing or stale with cars waiting to the side, you can keep rolling at a pace that may allow you to save some accelerating when you get there. Don't worry about those cars speeding past to get up there and stop. If you continue accelerating, you are wasting the effects of that gas, and then wasting more gas to re-accelerate when it turns green again.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, VW Polo Bluemotion > *. That will gets 60 miles from a single U.S gallon of fuel, 60!

If you seriously what to start saving money at the pumps, begin demanding diesel cars. I'm shocked that they haven't caught on yet over there.

Their list is pretty jacked up. A Civic and a Prius are pretty much exactly the same size, in no way is the Prius a midsize car. Also, if the Prius is midsize then the corolla and matrix should be midsize, and the matrix gets 25 city 31 highway which trumps the P.O.S. VW. I'll agree that the corolla used to be a compact car, but it really should be considered a midsize if the Camry/Accord are "large". The corolla's mileage is more impressive to me than most other cars on the road, it's rated at 27/35 and most people I know with one are seeing at least 38 on the highway.

Added weight due to safety/luxury features, government crash standards, revised epa guidelines, consumers wanting more power, etc. Rumor has it that Honda will have a new hybrid in the next year or two that will get close to 70mpg, we'll see how that goes.

I like how apparently we use European standards for size now, Camrys are in no way large sedans. The newer generations (only ones I've driven have all been 04+) feel pretty light and nimble and responsive when driving, and besides that I'm uncomfortable in the back without moving the front seats up, and uncomfortable in the front if I don't move the seats back.

Keep in mind too that over the pool they're paying more for gas per gallon than we are too. So American cars seem about right, I think a list based on bes gas mileage like Top 10 per a class would be more accurate, this list just seems like they wanted to get all the hybrids and what not in there.

Since I've been looking at new cars..it's kind of obviously off.

Gas is $3.99/gal, Diesel is $4.75/gal.

Would you pay the extra $.75 for double the mpg? I know I would. I would pay the $5.19 here per gal, if I had a car that got more than 45mpg. That is almost double what I am getting in the altima (23-24mpg), although I do not drive like a grandma.
