cheapest 1.5jz

OK i have been doin alot of research and reading about other peoples builds of this. im pretty interested in it and would like to do it. im not the richest of guys so i was wondering what the bare minimum of stuff i need to get this done fast as possible. i would like to use as much stuff off the 1j as possible.

all i know right now is that i will need a 2j bottom end and timing belt.

I just dropped off a 2jzge short block at the macine shop yesterday!

I had an old 2jzge engine sitting around that had been overheated and damaged the pistons, and a 1jz head from someone who ran it lean and messed up the pistons just enough to burn a little oil, but the head was fine.

I'm going to do a "1.5jz on the cheap" build with our Probe 2jz-gte forged piston set ($395), an Eristic 2jz-gte head gasket ($60), and new ACL 2jz bearings ($65).

Machine work is just to bore the block .5mm over, surface the deck and head,
and pin fit the rods.

Should be under $1000 all together for a rebuilt 1.5jz with forged 2jz-gte pistons!!!

How much power do you plan to make with this built motor and what clutch will you use?

Probably 500whp or so, but I'll use our Stage 4 clutch on this one just in case I get the itch to go for 600whp. :biglaugh:

Im about to order that stage 4 from you. but why build it for 500? even for 600?

You mean instead of using non-turbo pistons, and have problems with it pinging on 91 octane pump gas? :icon_bigg

I wouldn't think that replacing the damaged 230k mile 2jz-ge pistons with new turbo pistons would be unnecessary. I would much rather use forged pistons designed for a turbo engine, rather then a super thick (and expensive) head gasket. The 2jz-ge got overheated badly until the rings welded themself to the pistons and damaged the cylinders, so it needed to be at least .020" over anyway. Even if I only have 500whp from it, the piece of mind knowing that it will be reliable is worth $500 more, or whatever it costs extra. I have money to build it once, but I don't want to do it twice. :icon_wink

hay aaron, what shop you having it done at if you dont mind me asking??

Um, ours? :biglaugh:
JK, if you need anything done machine work wise, bring it by the shop. We used to use Superior, but after getting lied to and overcharged for work that sometimes wasn't even done completely, we found a new place that is a lot more honest and trustworthy.

So if bought a 2jz-ge and bypass tube, head gasket,. is that all i need.i also heard you need to use the timing belt from the 2jz-ge.

i feel like it cant be this easy lol:sarcasm:

How about you just get the 1j in there and running first

He is with YOU! nothing dumb about it :1zhelp:

Exactly, I meant he was right on and I agreed. It's just a funny way to say you agree with somone. :icon_wink

I think sometimes people try to do too much at once and end up with a big mess of a project sitting in their driveway for years, rather then just getting the car up and running and modding it later. Nothing wrong with a stock 1jz, especially if you already have one all together and ready to run, it's a great engine. I'm just using mostly parts I had laying around to throw together a 1.5jz. Just my .02 as usual :)

Sorry to revive an old thread. I am aiming for a similar setup, I am curious as to how well the eristic HG holds up to 500hp. It seems like a cheaper alternative to the more expensive cometic or stock.
