Your description sounds normal after the car is shut down.

for a fire extinguisher, you will have a hard time finding halon, as it is horrible for the environment, so the gov. is trying to eliminate it all together.

for an engine fire, you would most likely want ABC-Dry Chem.

for an interior fire, co2 would be top choice. however, it is less effective in open spaces.

i carry both.

Ummm...Halon is very common for racing and avation applications. Try an eBay or Google search before making this statement:

Halon is used in avation for a reason...might want to think about that.

Dry Chem is going to trash whatever you use it on...for a small fire, you will spend more time cleaning up afterward than damage caused by the fire. Plus, it's not as effective as Halon.

AFFF (Aquos Film Forming Foam) based extinguisher.

The bad part is that only a couple places in the US service this type and are meant for car use as they are only Class A/B and quite spendy too. But hey. anything is better than a charcoal briket supra!

my bad, i am a certified marine fire fighter, and i cant speak much for aviation or racing applications, but in the marine industry halon is being heavily phased out.

and i know drychem will trash whatever it touches, which is why i said carry another for interior applications. however, i have fought engine room fires using drychem extinguishers and they work damn well. especially where fuel is involved.

and i would rather have a ton of cleaning to do, then have a total loss.

so i guess its a personal choice, i have experience using dry chem extinguishers, and i trust them, which is why i went with that.

edit- plus, for those of us who dont have 100 to drop on a fire extinguisher (i know its an insurance polocy) a dry chem extinguisher is much more affordable
