I was wondering how important are the valve clearances are cuz i recently purchased an brand new Intake cam...
What are the problems i will have if i dont have the right clearances on the lifters??
And does Toyota still sell shims for this car??

The first thing i dislike about the 7m..:3d_frown:

why would your dislike an overhead cam designs? to complicated?

the clearance is very important...if you dont want to hear clanking everwhere, wear parts out, and run like a bag of ass. toyota still sells shims there like 5 bucks a shim. or yamaha uses the same shims and there alot cheaper.

Don't blame the 7M!

I can't tell you the info you need to know. But, I can tell you that you will have the same type issues with every motor you try to swap out cams in. You will need to keep you clearances within factory specs I'm sure. If Toyota doesn't still sell them, I would think you could find them somewhere. I have rarely heard of it being an issue.

Are you installing an N/A intake cam?

you can use the same everything you just need to reshim

This whole thing started as i guess i had BHG and i guess it over heated one time to many and the valve seat got bad and i thought my spring got stuck as it was making a loud tink sound and it just happens to be scuff marks on the same cam lobe so i purchased a new cam thinking my lifter was stuck..

Check all your clearances, regardless. Get everything set per the TSRM, and enjoy having the equivalent of a solid camshaft setup ;)

Oh, and you'll love the DOHC, as you have adjustable LSA (with adjustable cam gears) instead of swapping cams to determine if 106 or 108 LSA works best ;)

Yah I hate how you have to buy parts to set your valves...Guess it's the nature of the beast though.

If your cam lobes are in bad shape you will prolly have to change the shims anyways as they'll chewed about as will.

go to a junkyard and find a supra and pull the shims out. actually i think all toyotas use the same shims just diff thickness's except for some cars that are shimless. when i was working at toyota they only had one box of shims and they all fit my supra.

if you put in a new cam without doing shims you could actually cause a valve to stay open....if you open the clearance up too much then youll have a horrid racket coming from the head....this is also very stressful on the valve train as instead of a nice gradual opening you now have the lobe slamming into the bucket which inturn will throw the valve open....this is all round pretty bad....having a valve stuck open can cause you to back fire threw the intake and do damage as well as afterfire threw the exhaust! hp will drop like crazy!

the tsrm explains to you how to do shims etc....if toyota doesnt have the shim you need then there is always Yamaha and SIP racing.

So does Toyota sell there shims in .001" increments?

Toyota sells shims in 0.05mm (Approximately 0.002in) increments.

Even if you aren't replacing the cams, and just putting the original ones back in, check and adjust the valve clearance. There is a reason you are supposed to check and adjust it periodically.

So when checking for clearances make sure the cam is bolted on the head when using a feeler gauge??

Make sure the engine is cold. Valve is closed, that is on the base circle of the camshaft. Yes use feeler gauges. Make sure you have slight drag or the feeler gauge, you'll get the "feel". Yes the cam HAS to be bolted in, that is the clearance your looking for, between the cam and shim.

I have over 300 7M shims, and the tools to change them without using screw drivers, and other crap methods.
Years of collecting them.
Funny thing is I no longer run that set-up,
both my 7Ms have TODA inner shim buckets.
