Car won't start, '90 mk3 7m-GE

Hey guys I have a 1990 mk3 with a 7MGE from a 88'. has the 88 wireharness etc. Anyways, it used to drive just fine, until the headgasket blew. I pulled the motor, put anew head gasket on, checked the pistons and cylinders, everything was still in good shape, the valves looked good aswell.

I've got the motor back in the car, but I can't get it to start?

New battery, new alternator, engine internals are good, I can hear the fuel pump kicking on, has spark

I got it to start once with ether but if I let off the gas it would just die

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Does it turn over?

Have the ECu grounds connected below the intake, also the AFM plugged in?

Verify your timing marks, crank, cams, rotor at #1 wire, and #1 at TDC?

Check timing and spark plug wire order for sure.

I'm Having that exact problem although mine wont start period even with ether I've checked the timing several times and the wire and firing order everything is as it should be but still nothing I'm lost too.

Sounds like a loose ground as mentioned. Check them all.
