So I just had a bout with my '87 this weekend changing the timing belt, which was totally shredded and ready to go on me. The reason I checked her in the first place was due to some surging I was having at idle, up and down around 600-700, after getting fed up with setting the TPS and constantly having to set the timing. Changing the belt didn't do much for the surging, however, the timing is locked in tight now.

I did some research not too long ago on octane ratings, and found a bit of information regarding emissions and so forth. Having run 91 octane for about a year now, I've been noticing some pig stench from the tailpipe, and had an IMPOSSIBLE time trying to pass emissions last year (which turned into me tweaking the AFM to get through). The surging came out of nowhere about 7 months ago. Anyway, I've jumped down to 87 octane over the past couple of days, and it's completely ceased...sits perfectly wherever it needs to be, between being warmed up or on cold start.

Anybody have an idea as to why that may be? During my research I did find that the added octane may not be burned off, and forced out the exhaust. Emissions were high hydrocarbons, aka unburned fuel. Weak ignition on my end, possibly?

As a side note, I did try changing spark plugs, wires, and new/used distributor from a '91 I'd rewired in....just couldn't get 'er passed! :nono:

I just recently got those symptoms with my 86 but my timing belt is only 1 year old 10,000 miles. I have no clue what it is.

Yeah, any information would really be helpful. Now I've started having a problem with a super high idle, about 1100 rpm. Can't seem to get it steady...going to be looking into valves this weekend, need to change out stem seals, and there's quite a bit of tapping going on anyway.

Might as well pull the IACV and see if it's sticking while I'm at it.

How much are the shims anyway? Last I checked it was about $7 a piece from Toyota...any ideas where I can go for cheaper? I don't have the money for an entire kit of them, and hoping that I can move them around to match close as possible to tolerances instead of dishing out over $100 for the whole shebang.

2jz or 7m, those shims are a pain in the ass. But in the end oh so worth while. If they are running too tight I speculate that this could cause numerous emissions issues. If the valves are way on the tight side your gonna lose power too. It's just a matter of the valves never closing completely.

I'm curious about how you do after doing the shims....even though I am lucky enough to live in am area that doesn't have emissions laws of any type. A shim was so tight on number 1 that is was very badly affecting a compression test of the cylinder. After getting them all back to spec a tangable power improvement overall.

Read up. Some yamaha & honda motorcycles use the same size. Ford ztec engines have them. Just take one of your shims to a motorcycle shop and see if they have an assortment laying around. Buy the ones you need. Or visit your local junk yard and have fun searching. http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?121523-Alternative-Shims-for-7M-Engines
