He didn't? Read the thread again.

I'm not singling him out because what he suggested is a common old school method for installing the CPS/distributor although on this car there are easier ways to determine both valves on #1 are closed. That said if someone followed those instructions when setting valve timing they would end up confused for what should be obvious reasons. I know they're are people here who understand the basics of valve (cam) and ignition (CPS) timing but from the seemingly endless series of posts about the problems/errors encountered it's often hard to remember that.

For the record: With the valve train disconnected from the engine there is no "stroke" because it's the valve timing that determines it. With the belt off there is only TDC. Timing marks aside, the crank is set to TDC on any revolution, cams are set so both valves on cylinder one are closed, and the CPS set to where it will trigger spark for number one. What's so hard to understand about that?

OOPS! Leave the timing belt on when finding TDC... :( I dunno why I said take it off, haha, that would make no sense...

Newer Toyota's don't require this song and dance to find TDC. The lower timing pulley is notched with a mark just like the cams.

Wrong pulley. I am talking about the cogged pulley for the belt. If your is, someobody did it on their own.
