Okay, so let's narrow down our security system search:

We want something from DEI: Viper, Clifford, Python, etc.

I don't want to mess around with remote start because there's always the chance you left the car in 1st gear on a hill. Remote starters are better for automatics.

We're looking for the basic keyless entry, starter kill, a glass breakage / bump sensor, and if you can spare the extra cash a 2 way pager remote.

From viper we're looking at $200 for the Viper 5000 system.

DEI's description of the system

Sonic Electronics price and description

This systems pager can be programmed to vibrate so you wont interupt meetings :) Also, I noticed on Sonic Electronics page that they do not show the shock sensor or double gaurd (what is double gaurd anyway?) but list the starter kill twice. I do not see the shock sensor in the picture either.

There are also 5 auxilary outputs but I'm not sure what I could use them for. Maybe use these outputs to control the fuel pump ground? That way if the would be thief got around the starter kill he still couldn't take the car. Any other ideas for the 5 auxilary outputs? Something that hacks off the theifs feet at the ankles would be cool... unless you accidentally got yourself one day...

Is $200 too much for those who are interested? What other options would you suggest from DEI?

Totally agree with you. That's why I'm going to do it myself.

jetjock, You have one of these systems you mentioned or you want one?

I have two of them, in different cars. Installed myself. I like 'em because they're cheap, all in one, and have multiple AUX outputs, which on one car I needed to raise the doors after unlocking them. I also needed the long range they offered. They also have starter disable and carjacking features btw.

You want feedback or paging. No one pays attention to car alarms these days. If that's all you end up with it won't be much of an improvement over the factory system imho. The only add on I did to mine was to monitor the gas fill door which is easy to do, even when using the factory system. After all, a pint of raw linseed oil will trash an engine much better than sugar and only takes a few seconds to pour in using an old fuel injector bottle (you didn't hear that from me).

It's true remote start is best for automatics but there are work arounds, and systems that come designed to be used on manuals. Oh and I agree: Install it yourself....most alarm places are bucthers.

The shock sensor is the clear little box to the right of the remote, above the antenna, below the brain and to the left of the relay pack.

double guard is a 'warn away' system. I'm sure you've heard alarms chirp once or twice when someone bumps into 'em? That's a warn away. If the vehicle is bumped agian, then the alarm will go into full 'go crazy' mode. Or if the first bump is hard enough, it'll set the alarm off right away.

edit: I just checked the sonic electrnoics and it looks like the brain might have a built in shock sensor... the directed webpage is decieving. That would make more sence too, with the remote adjustablility of the shock sensor.

The only security system I'd have confidence in is one that will track your vehicle.

i have faith in my security system... a fuel pump kill switch, hidden in the car. ;)

To me alarms are a waste of money on our cars. First, no one will want to steal our cars, it's useless as parts from a theft point of veiw. No one in other countries wants our cars, and our cars are just too darn old.

Second, they only want our stereos, but if your dumb enough to advertise your stereo at the local movie theather or gas station then, oh well... Even with an alarm, they will atempt to steal something and you'll have broken glass and broken locks etc....

The serious car burglar that knows a lot about our cars will steal the entire car, but not by driving it. He will bring a tow truck and take the entire car with the alarm beeping, if your alarm has a level sensor. A few miles down the road, he pops open the hood, disconnects your battery and alarm is off. If your alarm is good enough to have a backup battery, he cuts your siren cable and thats it. Your car is gone.

To me it only makes sense to install keyless lock/unlock and an ignition kill switch. ~ $25 total. Buying all those $100+ alarms are just a waste..... A garage is the best theft deterrent. Just my 3 cents.......... :bigthumb:

Just got my Python 881XP installed, and might i add this thing is fucking sweet as all hell! I can lock/unlock/start my car right before i walk outside of my office building. It apparently has a 1/4 mile straight shot operating range. Although its having a few problems with arming the alarm while the Turbo Timer is still running but no biggie just arm when the car shuts off.

It has the remote start, which flashes the lights every 1 or 2 seconds until you get in the car and turn the key! Overall im VERY impressed with this thing, $330 well worth spent (factory refurb & $150 install)

Its a nice quite chirp when armed/disarmed and also flashes the fogs & driving lights when armed/disarmed. Alarm is nice and loud when its set off!
I got a very good deal on this install usually they charge $500+ installed for a brand new unit, i still got the lifetime install warranty and ive got a 1yr factory warranty on the alarm unit itself.

If your worried about security and tired of freezing your ass off in the winter mornings get an alarm from DEI well well worth the moola.
