Can you chrome the intake manifold?

It doesn't get as hot as the HEAD because it's being fed cold air, correct? And there's a gasket seperating the HEAD and the intake manifold? I remember reading somewhere that there was a special gasket made for the intake manifold to transfer less heat, does anyone know what I'm talking about and where I can get it from?

Are there any drawbacks to chroming the intake manifold? Does anyone here think it would discolor from the heat transfer of the block through the gasket?

I want to get a FFIM and I prefer to chrome everything under the hood (since it's easier to keep clean then polished aluminum which tarnishes and is harder to scrub spotless). Plus theoretically the chrome will allow less heat transfer then regular polished aluminum would right?

Thanks.

You mean like this?

2000 deg ceramic chrome...easier to keep looking good vs std chroming. Provides a thermal barrier as well. The ceramic can be applied to any metal...it will not chip, flake or discolor.

The intake mani connects to the head, not block. ;)

i was thinking more like straight chrome.... are you saying ceramic chrome tarnishes less then chrome? I know chrome can discolor or chip with extreme temperatures... but is the intake manifold really going to get that hot??? I don't think so??

I can see where you'd need to ceramic chrome the exhaust manifold....

But it does look good, thanks for the pic... I think chrome looks a little more bling tho ;)

NJ - that's what i meant :biglaugh:

I know, I was only busting your chops, ;). Honestly the ceramic coating jdub displayed above will discolor, trust me, and fairly quickly. Ive used both chrome ceramic coating and chrome powdercoat on builds and trust me within a matter of weeks it will turn more of a silver, and lose its reflectiveness. Im not saying the ceramic coating is bad, its just to say it will not discolor is a falicy.

This product is pretty much bullet proof...it will never tarnish; dirt just wipes off using a good cleaner like 409 or Simple Green.

You are correct though...the ceramic takes on the surface characteristics of the metal. Since aluminum is soft and the intake must be bead blasted, it takes on more of a matt finish. It's got a lot of bling though...just not a mirror type shine like true chrome does.

I've done a lot of this for other guys here and on eBay...not a single complaint ;)

Powdercoat will...quickly. I've been doing this for over 3 years and have almost my entire engine done in it. Like I said...dirt/oil/grime wipes right off. And it has never discolored on intakes, cam covers, brackets, etc. Very high heat will cause some discoloration, but it takes on more of a titanium look on exhaust manifolds, turbos, downpipes, etc.

Yes you can definitely chrome plate it as tsuper said. I would install bolts into the threads, that way, you get clean threads and you get a few extra chrome plated bolts.

ahhh, i found it now, searched for phenolic....
http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10246&highlight=Phenolic

made by this company
http://www.outlawengineering.com/index.html

anyone know what happened to this GB? They said their test car had a 35 degrees F temperature drop for the intake temps at cruising speeds, and 60 degrees F drop for idling speeds...

if i was in indiana i'd get one for sure... i was reading online they'll make one for free for anyone if they let them install it, dyno before and after to get the results .... so someone in indiana go and get one !! free phenolic spacer and free dyno run!!! :)
