Can someone please just tell me the simple answer of what the wire gauge size is for the engine harness wires? Also, TXL or GXL?

I've looked far and wide for our specific engine and I'm just finding everything that I am not looking for. I'm looking to buy fresh wire to build a new engine harness, possibly from Wire Barn, who sells both TXL or GXL type wire. Before I buy a bunch of wire I just want to make sure I am buying the correct wire size and wire type. Thank you in advance! Glad to be back on the forum!!

When I rebuilt my 7M harness I used 16ga wire for all signal wires to sensors and ground. If I had to do again I would go with 18ga as I had some difficulty installing the larger wire in some of the terminals and connector housings.

I used 12ga for the main power wire. Comes off the B1 connector. And I believe those are black with orange stripe and black with red stripe. There might be a few others.

All GXL. You want the heavier duty wire to resist heat and fluid. And then for the knock sensors, and cps signal you will want to shielded wire that is grounded.

This is VERY helpful information. Thank you. What I plan on doing is finding a newer Toyota vehicle engine harness that has the same wire colors. I'm going to buy fresh new wire for the bulk of the harness, but solder in matching wiring diagram wires, just from newer cars. It will make reading the wiring diagram of a newly made harness that much easier.

I use wire m22759.
FYI,

there is about one hundred different categories under that (series number).

Funny enough, i have a post explaining the most commonly used in the racing world right here in Supramania!

My friend made his new engine harness using 22 AWG PTFE wires. This is military spec wiring.
This video might also help you. Good luck. HPA wiring suggestions.

I dislike PTFE due to the flourine outgasing when it catches fire. Most aerospace industry went away from that jacket material for that very reason and are using the SAE-AS22759/80 series and up. Those do not out gas flourine.

TXL is in most OEM cars.

psst.

save some coin and get one or two colors tops. you will need to label each end and have a running spreadsheet with assignments but it simplifies buying the wire and if you buy more of the same size, you tend to get a hefty discount.

I deal exclusively in white for the wire i get since that is what the airplanes tend to use throughout.

You make excellent points. Also, thanks for sharing the links to your wiring posts. I will most certainly look those over. For the bulk wiring, I would get crazier than black, red, and white. It's just easier to quickly identify what's what. I would still make a spreadsheet and then shrink it down to laminate it to keep in the garage lol. As far as labeling the wires, do you recommend a label maker to that? I just imagine the labels wearing/fading if the label maker is shit, but I guess that depends on their location.

You only need the labels while the wires are not in their connectors.

Once the wires are pinned up in the connector. No need for labels on each individual wire.

the spreadsheet should tell you exactly where the wires goes from to. Hence why regardless of color, it is IMPORTANT to run a spreadsheet.

Yeah, that does make more sense, because you should only need to fiddle with the wires while you're building the harness. I will definitely be making a spreadsheet though.

When I did my 2jz harness I used 18 for everything power was 16 and splice grounds where 16.

I understand sensors can be 20-22 seeing all the aftermarket harnesses.

Sensors draw like nothing, it’s the injectors and coils that have big draws.

If you’re looking for the actual wiring used for the harness to determine original wire size, it is all Sumitomo and for the most part still manufactured. Each wire has markings that indicate it’s size (and it’s not by AWG, all by mm2). For example if you look at an injector wire it will say “sumitomo wiring VX 1.25f”. VX series wire, 1.2mm2 x-section. Not all of the wires indicate the series though - you need to make some correlations based on approximate size and markings (those red dots/lines).

That is good to know and interesting information. I wish I had a spare engine harness just to examine.
