lets see what the guys on vwvortex think

the guy has since edited his post, but here:
"The compression ratio on 1.8t's MUST have 91 or higher to function properly. Less octane gas is less dense as higher octane (I believe), so the piston will be extending it's TDC location due to the high compression with low density fuel. Usually this causes deto, which makes a pinging noise (it's the piston slamming against the head). Basically, the fuel must be dense enough to correspond with the compression ratio, having enough density to hold the piston in the intended TDC location.Higher octane doesn't ALWAYS mean more power. Putting 93 in an engine that doesn't have the compression ratio to produce more power will only cost you more money at the pump."

Usually this causes deto, which makes a pinging noise (it's the piston slamming against the head).
huh?

My friend ran his 02' 1.8T GTI on cheap 87 for a while with no pinging until I told him I'd kill him if I ever see anything less than Chevron or Shell 93 octane.

Wrong.

Detonation is the sound you hear when two flame front collide inside the combustion chamber. One, caused by normal spark ignition. The other, unwanted caused by compression.

87 octane burns faster than 91. Hence, it's more prone to cause detonation in turbo / high compression engines.

And yeah, over time, detonation will eat little holes in the top of your pistons. That is a BAD thing.

Tell him he's a moron, and to send his car to me for engine replacement. :biglaugh:

I thought about getting a MKII and putting a 1.8t into it, but I dunno I really like a lowered MKIV. I may still just get a MKII to DD and then do a swap later on down the road, either a 1.8t or a turbo VR6.

Don't forget to pickup some variable compression pistons if you get a dub. I've had mine for 2 weeks now ;) They're awesome.

Volkswagons are like legos, I love it. I wish i could find a good condition jetta coupe around here that was afordable. I would love to daily that thing with a 1.8t.
