Can I use 275/35R18 Tire in 18”x8.5 wheel in my '88 supra?

I want to buy a drag radial BF 275/35 R18, but my rear wheels are 18x8.5, the dealer suggest 18 x 9 to 18 x11 wheels?

Wheel spects: 18 x 8.5 5-114.3 38sm

So any one has used them, with out any problem?

For the most part, I'll respond from an appearance standpoint.

275s will have a bulging sidewall on a 8.5" wheel.

Different manufacturers of the same width tire will give you different sidewall appearances. Consider these sizes and the appearance that they'll give on an 8.5" wheel:

235: no-stretch to very-slight-stretched appearance. (but I would use this size for the front tire.)
245: no-bulge to very-slight-bulge
255: slight bulge

If I was buying based on appearance on a rear tire, I'd go 245/40. For the drag strip, I'd go for more tire patch: 255/40. If you wanna push it on the tire width, I'd go 265/35 max.

I'll respond from a saftey/sanity perspective.

The answer is NO.

BF Goodrich states that the rim width range for that tire is 9-11", with the measured rim width being 9.5". (The measuring rim width is the industry standardized rim width upon which the tire must be mounted in order to confirm it meets its dimensional targets.)

An 8.5" rim is 1/2" too narrow to be safe and 1" short of the optimal size for that tire.

If you insist upon running that narrow ass 8.5" rim, then you need something considerably more narrow.

Why are you trying to run a Drag Radial in a 35 series tire on an 18" rim anyway? It's going to hook like shit.
