Lithium + oxygen + a little heat = deathtrap
If it's raining you don't even need the heat. Don't forget it's a chemical fire and lithium + water will fuel itself. With the number of cells needed to run a daily driven car there isn't a very good way to hide them all safely if a wreck occurs.

All a lithium cell needs is to be cracked. The battery will already be warm from the redox reaction supplying the car with power and a crack will expose the lithium to oxygen and start a CHEMICAL fire. One that cannot be put out with water. In fact search youtube for a lithium water reaction, it's very exothermic.
Current cars do have a battery, same redox reaction concept but different elements being used.

Wind energy and solar have great potentials.
Now if only making the batteries didn't cause acid rain and horrible, horrible pollution maybe then I could get fully behind electric cars.
