Yep sucks being on the other side of the world.

Back when I had my Cams done there weren't many options so I had them Hard Face welded (same stuff they use on bulldozer teeth) then ground to my specs.

The pair cost me $1300 AUD so not cheap.....

So is this scoring thing an inherent flaw in the design of the head (it not being of Yamaha design that is), or is it caused by particulate matter/inadequate filtration?

I'm almost worried to go look at my head now!

Cams are on the kitchen floor - i'll give them a clean later and see how bad they look...

The OP's head is an extreme case and as I said earlier it's had a filter block and go bypass and circulate garbage through the motor at some point in it's life.

Stock the Cams have a soft babbit material coating that LOOKS horrible when you pull the motor down but it affects nothing.

The Head and Caps shouldn't have any marking/scores.

The journals should never look like that. It looks like oil starvation, which probalby has been covered. This happens before rodknock, usually.

That's what it looks like to me as well. What kind of oil filter is/was on the motor?

I have personally seen them not blue, when run with out oil.

Nice pictures on the thumbnail. I never even look at them, as every other one so far has been blurry. There is contamination. I still wouldn't rule out blockage.
