cams making wierd noises

i recently replaced the crankshaft oil seal and the oil pump oil seal....i got it all back together today....turned it on to see if i had any leaks everything was fine....i drove it down the road a bit and it started making a fast pace click noise like lil balls were slapping each other...from what sounded like the cams...wanted to know if anyone might know what the issue is...?

Did you adjust the timing belt tensioner correctly?

now i adjusted it once an i thought i was right...then i went back through the manual....an i thought i may have under tightened it.....so now it may be over tightened

You loosen the tensioner bolt a little rotate the crank clockwise then tighten the adjuster bolt to NO more than 36ft/lbs.

Dunno just working backwards through things he's touched to make sure it's done right at this point.

ah okay, because the only this i can think of is excessive valve lash making a tick, but he didn't touch any of that, so i'm stumped, heh.

well i never touched the cams just the tensioner....but i will give it a try see what happens

Maybe the tensioner bearing, although they usually squeal when they go bad.

I have found my cam belts hold up better with some slight added pressure v/s just the spring...

Call me crazy if you like I've changed out about 6 timing belts on Toyota I6 engines.. Both 5M and 7M, and added slight pressure over the spring, never a problem in many 100,000 miles

By slight pressure, I mean you do just like IJ noted, loosen the tensioner, turn back to get the belt slack out between the crank and the intake cam, and then using a short screw driver, gently push the tensioner slightly tighter than the spring is holding it while tightening the tensioner retainer bolt. Done.

well i backed it and retighten the tensioner.......you can hear it very very faint now no where near as loud as before i do think im going to replace that spring tho....
