Heres the story. Went NA-T and i wanna swap the GE inake cam for the GTE intake cam(exhaust is the same right???)

I'm gonna do it all in the car. the TSRM is kinda all split up for my exact job.
i'm assuming, of course i gotta take timing belt/cover, and i'll do the cam seals. Is there no replaceable bearing for the cams?? and what are the advantages of getting aftermarket cam gears? What holds the shims in exactly?? I read this link, i know it will be more clear when i can see mine up close.

so to anyone whos done theres in car, is there any suprises that i may be missing. seems like a pretty straight forward job, thanks all.

It's pretty straight forward. There are no bearings, and the shims are held in by the cam. That is to say they're not really held in, but the lip on the bucket and the cam on top of them prevent them from coming out.

Adjustable cam gears allow you to change when the cams open/close. You probably don't need these unless you start modifying things quite a bit more and need to adjust them with dyno tuning.

They're really a lot more useful with aftermarket cams, IMO.

seemed pretty straight forward just wanted to check.

My experience has been that the clearances will come in pretty close when swapping cams. As a result not many of the shims will need changing. Just measure all the shim thicknesses and write it down when the cam is out.

Perfect time to replace the cam cover seal if its hard & leaking.
Dont forget to put some sealer around the two corners of the #1 cam bearing & also the outside of the cam seal as this is one area where oil just loves to leak.

right on guys seems pretty straight forward, thank.

blackcat i just changed those gaskets when i went na-t so i think i'll just be re-using them.

one last thing for anyone who went na-t and ran NA cams then swapped to Turbo Cams..was it a noticable upgrade and worth the time?

reading comprehension owns me...

Anyway, the TSRM has all the info on how to do it all (shims, where to put the FIPG so the front cam cap doesn't leak, ect)

I know that I've seen a bunch of Turbo guys put NA cams in the turbo head.

really, so 7m-gte w/NA Cams what are the results.

i figured toyota put a bit more lift on the turbo cam to take more advantage of positive pressure. anyone?

I think it was stated in another thread that you loose a little up top with the GE cams.

yah but i haven't heard you loose mid-high power with turbo cams, i guess you cant have the best of both worlds though, :nono:

anyone else?? please people that have done what i'm going to do, i know theres a lot of NA-T'ers out there.

"A little" is an understatement. N/A cams in the turbo engine CHOKES the powerband. The torque comes on hard and fast, but then it falls on it's face.

Do you still have the N/A intake manifold? That MIGHT help offset it, but I really doubt it...

i have the turbo upper intake; lower is the same of course.
chokes all the powerband??? or the low end torque..i LIKE the low end torque and VERY quick boost

With the N/A cam you come on boost fast, lots of torque, then it falls on it's face in the higher RPMs.

Turbo cam is a nice broad powerband that will pull almost till readline.

If you take measurement with a caliper you'll be able to note which shims go where incase you want to switch back, but I doubt you will want to.

What ever you do, make sure you follow all the TSRM torque sequences. Also check your valve clearences before wrapping it all up.

i hope i still get my quick boost:evil2: but we'll see. i'm sure when i switch the cam and valve cover and put the proper throttle linkage on and get 100%throttle instead of about 3/4, i wont even consider going back.

ohh and i will be doing it all per the book.
