5 pages of results on searching for "cam" has yielded little to no results for me. My head gasket's gone out, and when I take the head off, I'm gonna put new cams in it. I want something that is effective, as far as power goes, but I also want something that's going to give my car that throaty, mean sound more like you'd hear in a strong v-8. Pretty much everything else in the engine has been replaced (for stronger, better parts), so I might as well change the cams while I'm at it.

So basically, what I'm asking is, What do I need to look for in order to really improve the sound of the car?

Ron Ramirez tubular manifold, with equal length runners, good luck getting one :biglaugh:

I have this strange feeling that a FFIM and the smoothly routed IC pipes that go along with it will have an effect

A well designed 4" exhaust, no cat, Burns muffler :naughty:

Big cams should definitely help out especially combined with some more head work, larger valves! But probably not as much as a great exhaust system

Just my $0.02 I'm sure everyone has their own opinion on the matter

never going to get a throaty V8 mustang style sound out of a turbocharged I6...

especially once you start modding, all you hear is the turbo

What you need to do if you want that V8 sound is put in the 1UZ-FE and run ITB's that would sound sweet.

I'm talking about at idle. I know it's not going to roar at 5 grand like any v8. I just want a mean sounding idle.

If you want to upgrade based on sound and go to ebay to upgrade, that's a bad idea. I want to upgrade my cams, and I'm willing to push some bigger bucks to get a more trusted, more durable, and more reliable cam that will not only enhance my performance, but make the car sound great as well.

You can always get custom regrinds, or hard welded cams as well. There is an excellent thread about cams stickied over on SF.

Exhaust is going to do the most for the sound quality of the car, at idle as well as wide open.

I've got Borla header/downpipe/exhaust and flowmaster exhaust tip (no cat). Good deep sound at all ranges. I think if I change the sound with a bigger cam, it should sound damn good.

Hmmm...I'm thinking the whole idea of a set of cams has little to do with changing the way the motor sounds ;)
