So I had to take my car to the CA state ref for a checkout of my intake. The car passed emissions perfect with flying colors but he told me I needed to change a few things. SO now I figure oh alright the downpipe for sure but I couldn't think of anything else...So he gives me a sheet of paper that says my Greddy turbo timer is not smog legal... Gatta love this wonderful state, My rant sorry. -_-

ITS A TURBO TIMER Seriously all cars should have one cooldown = good

That has nothing to do with smog. Its an ignition device, why was the smog technician checking that?

I always thought they were stupid. How hard is it to sit there for a minute while it idles down for a bit??

you need a new smog tech. i passed with a turboxs bov, open air intake, and some other little things... nothing outrageout though.

but he didnt sweat any of it, car passed, had a cat, was safe, so he signed off on it.
in all honesty though that tech was being a dick... next time just toss it in the glovebox or tuck it away somewhere hidden.

i enjoy listening to my car. so that way, when something is worng, i hear it before it gets too bad... or i catch it before something else happens.

thats true... but you can also leave the key in and car running and listen to =) im just weird about it.. im patient so i just wait for it.

thats what i meant... i sit in my car, with the key in... i dont walk away from a running car unless im running inside for 10seconds, walking into my garage, and thats about it... haha. i always have my stereo on, so i like to look at my gauges and what not... but i just noticed that for the past few days, my oil gauge doesnt go over 20psi... ever... :3d_frown:

.....................................

People sit in there cars and listen?

The "cool down" is a thing of the past. Just take it eazy the final few miles of operation and you'll be fine.

But to OP. The Turbo timer is a safety issue device, and is not carb certified. (even though it has nothing to do with smog)

And to Rennat; He Said STATE REF. (if you think this is ridiculous talk to 1JoeZee in 2004 when he failed when the inspection with an Pyrometer that wasn't even plugged in or installed!)

EDIT: LOL at 20 PSI! (My 240k mile 7M read 20 PSI at idle in the summer. but i ditched the stock oil cooler mount and went with a sandwich)

Knock Knock. :D

i totally thought he said test only... i didnt even catch that. ref = fail. just put everything back to stock. my friends have been failed for boost gauges...

final miles eh? most of my trips are less than 5... haha.

but im not tooooo concerned with the whole 20psi thing... i do have 0w-30 in the thing. but it does bother me enough where im not going above 3k anymore....

GTFO with your knock knock.

I even had smog tech tell me that my Lexus A.F.M isn't stock, how the hell would he know just buy looking at it??? He must have just guessed since my 57 trim turbo behind a "Toyota" (ct/26) housing was nice and shiny. So, apparently he thought my Lexus A.F.M wasn't stock either, he must have very good eye sight.

How is this possible? does north and south California have different smog laws? why do they require smog when selling? Smog is a state law not a county law. For new cars, maybe, until they become 4-5 years old: and then every two years, and just tags in between.

its different for different countys...

and it has a lot to do with population. which is why way north CA doesnt have such bad laws. my friends dad registered all of his trucks/car/motorcycles up north so he doesnt have to smog... lucky bastard...

Talk to me when you get a STATE REF ticket.

Can anyone read?

Options on the State Ref Ticket.
1) Pay Huge Fine.
2) See state ref and they check your car with a fine tooth comb and impose fines!

Redacted per Title 18 USC Section 798
California has three smog check programs: Enhanced, Basic, and Change of Ownership. Enhanced means the vehicle gets put on the dyno and tested for NOx. Basic means the old two speed idle test. Change of Ownership means the vehicle is tested once when ownership changes or when initially registered in California. Such vehicles also get the two speed idle test. The program map can be found here:

http://tinyurl.com/5765tn

As you can see a fair majority of the state does not require Enhanced testing. Personally I like the program. If one knows what they're doing it's easy to maintain compliance, keeps pollution at bay in urban areas, and addresses (although not effectively enough) the huge number of resident punks and self-centered assholes who couldn't give a rat's ass how much crap they're spewing into the air. Not to mention keeping in check those who, due to stupidity, couldn't make their engines run correctly if their lives depended on it. As for those who don't like it and want to leave, well, don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out....
