Behind the keyboard...
Hi all, after being asked a couple of times why i didn't have a buildthread and some convincing words from Ian, i'm posting my buildthread. I have been searching through my stash of images but haven't found to many usable images. The first images that i post are quite bad but are clear enough to see what's going on.

I've had quite some engine trouble in the past with her and during the last rebuild i made a big mistake. I decided to fix some minor dings and other things bodywise. I soon enough found enough horrible work from the previous owner that needed fixing and one thing led to another.

enginebaypaint1.jpg

At first i cleaned the enginebay and removed most of the stuff that in it

enginebaypaint2.jpg

And now there's Panther Black Mica in the enginebay :) I love it :) First time holding a paintgun. No runs whatsoever.

bm1.jpg

I borrowed a B&M type 3 kit from a good friend and taped the q-panels and skirts on the supra.

bm2.jpg

As you can see, the 17x10" wheels were nowhere wide enough, even though they are too wide for the stock body

bm3.jpg

And another pic, with my DoLuck frontbumper in it too, albeit partially ;)

bm4.jpg

Wide rear, looks like it's sagging down a bit, which is one of reasons i decided not to buy the kit. The fact that i needed almost 5" spacers on each rearwheel didn't help either.

nohood1.jpg

After sitting a while, cletussing on the bodywork. Do not look at the Q-panels...

hall1.jpg

hall2.jpg

sideprofile1.jpg

A few months later i bought a set of replica Bomex sideskirts and rear add ons. As you can see, the skirts don't fit very well... at all...

hoodcut1.jpg

Out of pure boredom i grabbed a hood that i had lying around and started cutting into it.

hoodcut2.jpg

Raised it about 2" in the back, made the cowl wider and rewelded it.

customhood1.jpg

Standing next to the car it doesn't look all that different, it has a nice vent though.

customhood2.jpg

On the car it's a whole different ballgame...

customhood3.jpg

customhood4.jpg

goodies.jpg

I saved some money and bought a SP61GT, RC 550's and a turbotimer with harness.

exhaust3.jpg

Ofcourse a new turbo needs a new exhaust so i made one, 90mm stainless steel

exhaust1.jpg

Seen here with not so great downpipe, mostly the corners bugged me

exhaust2.jpg

There is a very big chance that i will replace this exhaust sooner or later

garage1.jpg

Finally, i brought her home with me, i couldn't leave her in my dads company garage anymore due to changed circumstances. There's still plenty of room now...

downpipe1.jpg

Start of the new downpipe, turbo elbow part.

downpipe2.jpg

Didn't turn out as pretty as i had hoped, does look better than the pictures show though.

ic1.jpg

After a friend took me for a spin in his bpu mk4 i decided to remedy my burst of adrenaline with some new parts. So i ordered this bigass intercooler

ic2.jpg

Looks rather big compared to the stock IC

ic3.jpg

In place

ic4.jpg

And with DoLuck bumper in front of it. No trimming needed on either IC or bumper.

icp1.jpg

A bigger ic needs new ic piping, ordered a universal kit, cut it to fit and didn't like the finish

icp2.jpg

So i polished it

icp3.jpg

Some more

ffim3.jpg

One thing led to another again, i wanted a ffim, so i started cutting

ffim5.jpg

After welding a lot i found out that i should probably have clamped it down.

ffim6.jpg

Just before welding the handmade tb flange onto the plenum

icp4.jpg

And here it is with the flange welded onto it. Finish looks shitty though...

icp5.jpg

And it shines :) Also, keep in mind, i just bought my Tig welder a few days before this and everything i know about tig welding, i learned from dvd's and reading on the net.

icp6.jpg

found another section that needed polishing

icp7.jpg

Nice and shiny

And then i finally came to my senses about cletussing here...

I bit the bullet and removed everything that wasn't supposed to be on the rear q-panels and ordered a S2 q-panel kit. Damn expensive, but i should've bought it much earlier. Fitment is second to none and when you put things into perspective there's not reason at all to start cletussing.

s2regulus2.jpg

As you can see i also have a pair of genuine Regulus skirts (Thanks Dr.Jonezz ;)) and a Regulus rear wing that needs to modified to follow the wider bodyline.

s2regulus3.jpg

I'm still having some trouble getting all the lowspots out of where i molded the s2 panel into the supra's q-panel though. Not putting paint on it before i have them out though.

bbkclearance1.jpg

I decided it was time for more parts but i was going to have some trouble with clearing the wheels' spokes.

bbkclearance2.jpg

Spacer should fix that though.

wheelspacers_front1.jpg

And here they are, H&R 15mm spacers. complete with longer studs.

bbk1.jpg

Add a nice big black new caliper with EBC Yellowstuff

bbk2.jpg

8 pots... oh well. I'm limited to what is legal in germany though. This is one of the few kits that are legal and the only one to be easy-legal.

bbk3.jpg

Bigger calipers... bigger discs. Slotted ofcourse

bbk4.jpg

Caliper with pads over the disc

bbk5.jpg

Barely clearing the wheel

fenderclearance1.jpg

I need wider front fenders. B&M type 3 wider front fenders it is.

bmfender1.jpg

Tada :) About 1 inch wider each. Perfect fit :)

coilovers1.jpg

Something nice in a box. Just to drop it a bit. Again, i'm limited by the german TuV. The only legal documented set of coilovers for the supra.

coilovers2.jpg

Orange is nice, black would've been better.

coilovers3.jpg

And installed on the driversside rear. Invisible on the front wheels.

garage3.jpg

As you can see, the garage is a mess, i have no place to store anything and i need to get her finished so i can move it out and clean this damn mess.

I have quite a few other tricks applied such as:
- Aeromotive FPR
- MAF-T Pro w/ boostcontroll
- Innovative wideband and X16
- Walbro 255lph fuelpump
- couple of gauges from prosport

I also have a set of JDM Powerfolding mirrors waiting to modified and installed.

As for the hood, i'm not quite sure if i'm actually going to use it. It needs lots of TLC to get its' surface completely straight so that will probably a project to be finished after the car is buttoned up again.

As for now, i need to finish up my Regulus skirts that i sectioned to fit and follow the wider bodyline under the rear q-panels. Then i need to get those damn low spots out and send her out for paint. That is if i don't find any other flaws in it. I'll probably have the painter check it once more aswell.

And after the body is done, i can get back to the engine. I will probably make new ffim because i think i can do better. And since i bought the Tig i better put it to good use ;)

I will try to update this thread as much as possible although i must say that i've been working on her for about 6 years now. I've driven it only one...combined... The engine hasn't been crancked since christmas 2005.

Hope you enjoyed :)

One thing is for sure, there's been a lot of money in my past... just can't for the life of me remember where it's gone :D But honestly, it is spread out over a couple of years.

Looks like you made some good decisions on the body parts! My head hurts looking at that, knowing how much work that is! I lost tons of last year's summer and 3 months already this year being a slave to the car. I must keep mine forever because I would never have the will to build it all over again!

Oh i'm not touching a single piece of sandpaper after this thing is done, i seriously hate sanding by now. Especially that for every lowspot i removed... 3 new ones appear.

Well i got off my ass this afternoon to continue modding the Regulus skirts. There was certain cuttingdisc in my garage that i think i should share here...

cuttingdisc1.jpg

regulusmod1.jpg

Those gaps need to be closed...

polyestercloth.jpg

If you ever need to do any sort of polyester work where you need cloth... use woven cloth. I find it's much easier to work with. You can actually correct it with your hands (wear latex gloves !!!) without having more strands on your hands than on the object at hand.

regulusmod2.jpg

Anyway, using industial polyester resin and catalyst, i started working on bridging the gaps i had after sectioning the rear of the skirt. The industrial stuff gives you more time before it starts to cure, rather than regular autobody polyesterkits.

I used 3 layers of cloth, don't know exactly what weight cloth it is, but 3 layers should be enough for this particular application.

I will obviously close that last big gap aswell, but i needed to fixate the upright part into position first. When the resin has cured i will remove the tape and see if it actually stays in that position... i hope it does.

Well that's all for today, more to come tomorrow :)

Charles, i used Bomex rears molded into the bumper that was then stretched to follow the q-panel.

Brad, i know, i realized that too after cutting them. I might however still do that. The skirt should still be removable and after correcting this mishap, i could take it off and put some new polyester on the inside.

On the other hand, because i cut over the slots it doesn't stand out the way it does in these pictures. I will have to look at it when i've buttoned it up to see if i like it or not. If not, saw-time ;)

Edit: Just thought of it, if i had cut the skirts the same way as Randy did yours, i would have ended up with a "flat spot" where those slots are.

Hey Sebastiaan.

Looks like you're able to build and finish your supra after all. Seeing the amount of work still to be done, you're almost half way there! :D

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing it IRL sometime when it's finished.

Thanks guys, i'm looking forward to seeing it finished aswell lol.

I went at it again this morning and patched the final gap on the rear upright of the skirt.
regulusmod3.jpg

The gray tape actually popped off overnight and it was still positioned exactly right.

Again 3 layers of FG and it looks like this
regulusmod4.jpg

I am having a trouble on deciding how to mount the wingtips of the Regulus wing, i think i might be going with some sort of plug to stick into the holes as they don't seem to have any threading. Previous owner of the wing must have used some sort of tape to keep it on the car, but i'd rather have something more... reliable lol. Don't want to see it tearing off driving on the freeway :D

reguluswingtip1.jpg

As you can see, no threading

reguluswingtip2.jpg

Just 3 holes in the back, 1 in the middle and nothing up front.

I'm also trying to decide if i should go with this
reguluswingprofile1.jpg

or this ?
reguluswingprofile2.jpg

I prefer the second one, but the gap where the wingtip meets the wing is uneven and rather big. I'd have to compensate for that somehow, but i don't have a solid idea just how to go about that.
