burning oil question

i have an issue with oil smoke out of the exhaust on decel. it happens when i let off the gas and leave the car in gear, but not all the time.
i was leaning towards bad valve seals or piston rings, but someone mentioned it might be the turbo seals.
is there a test that i can do to figure out what the problem is?

pull the accordian off and look for signs of oil leakage around the compressor blades. though normally if its turbo seals, you will leave a james bond style smoke screen behind you.

thanks. it's not bad all the time, but in stop and go traffic i can see it and smell it.

Theres only a few things that create oil smoke out exhaust. If its blue then the oil is being combusted in the cylinder so usually valve stem seals but .. If its white oil smoke (don't confuse with with coolant smoke) then its usually the turbo seals gone letting oil onto the hot manifold. 3 possibilities in my experience is Valve stem seals, Turbo seals or a BHG.

Well i would lean more towards valve seals because if it was turbo seals the smoke would be white!

before you jump into any major work though i would thoroughly check the pvc system and make sure you got no blockages or something causing your sump to pressurise under boost and push oil past all your rings and seals

EDIT: i almost forgot about the rings, they could be a culprit too, Though if its a fresh rebuild I would say its unlikely .... a compression test will tell you if they are worn,, make sure to put a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder for the wet test and cross reference with the dry test.
