Hey guys I was messing around with my cars wiring harness, trying to find a short....

well when I went to see if I could start the car, I turned the wheel and heard a mechanical click. Now the wheel won't budge at all. I tried to start the car but the key won't turn either. The lock button on the igniton is clicked in.

I was hoping someone would tell me this is a Saftey feature and is easy to correct......

Because I'm broke, just spent two hundred dollars on a TCM.

its the steering lock, i assume you turned the wheel w/ the key out when it clicked? 99% of the cars i've had have had a steering wheel lock on it. The one that didnt was because it broke. Just put the key in the ignition and wiggle the wheel while wiggling the key.

i geuss you have to have a feel for it?

its a pain on some cars but it will happen frequently. anyone know the purpose of this feature? possibly if someone trys to steal the car and they wont be able to turn the wheel?

I think so. and imagine you parked on a hill and the parked car got away on you. If its locked the car will veer to one side and stop or at least travel in one predictable direction. If it wasn't locked the car would bounce off things and potentially keep travelling.

Just turn the steering wheel a degree or two to the opposite side you were turning when it locked and the ignition will free right up.

It's mostly used as a theft safety. Motorcycle's also have a feature when you turn the handlebars to full lock and take the key out. So a thief can't just drive/ride it away.

yea without a steering lock if u were on a hill someone could easily just hop in and compression start the car and then be off.

i want to join in on the "if there wasnt a supramania" thing, but i got nothing...:(
