updates... finished welding, this should be the final product unless i need to grind down the welds, but it should be fine. the reasoning behind not grinding the welds is for strength, i figure i'm not going to see it and why remove the metal if it will add strength. i know its not the best looking, but for free what can you complain about. the bushing is a marlin crawler w56 bushing. i searched and a member had suggested getting it and i'm glad i did. i have owned the white one and the white one was a very very tight fit (had to force it in with a light tap of the hammer. this orange one slid in perfect with some slight force. so what do you guys think? i will install it into my tranny tomorrow and get a video of the throw

Have either of you considered putting a metal sleeve over the welded portion and then welding that on? An overlapping reinforcement... would that perhaps remedy the concern of breaking the welds?

i was thinking about that, but i dont know if i have clearance for one yet. we took a hammer to the shifter and it wasn't breaking.. it felt very solid. i will think about it after i put it in my trans and test shift with it.. out of the car (trans is out of the car still from my main seal replacement)

Where does the knob screw on?

i will tap the shifter before it fully gets installed. the shift knob i have is a momo and it has screws on the sides anyway, but i think i'll thread for the future since i have a tap kit

I posted this same info on the first page. But when I re-read it I realized I didnt mention to weld the roll pin (top, bottom and sides). :nono:

what do u mean weld the roll pin

after comparing shifters i dont think i will need the sleeve, it is already much thicker than the ebay shifter in that area, much much thicker and i never had a prob with the ebay one for the time ive had it and its been to a few road racing events

Big difference in a single piece of steel and something that's been cutNwelded though.

It may not break right away but there's considerable leverage acting on it.

Not bagging your project but I have to ask Why?

Just meant the same thing as CRE suggested, only using a split in half roll pin as the sleave.

yea i know what you mean, i did the project in response to the lack of affordable short shifters i can find and the high cost of the single one i can find (c's) i'm sure the c's is worth the money, but i do enjoy being creative and making my own stuff. while the ebay one i have works great for me, i think it could feel tighter and less sloppy. this is basically a free mod that can work or can be trashed, so i figure why the hell not. too many people these days just buy parts and bolt them on, but there is alot of pride in making something and saying you did it vs you bought it.

I "make" a LOT of my own parts so can understand that concept but (there's always a but) I will rarely do it when there's an existing functional part available as it's just not worth my time/machine time/effort to do.

Add into this the PITA aspect of any failures and your saving $300 could very well end up costing double this.

Again not bagging just giving another perspective.

yea but $300 goes a long way when your still in school, so perhaps that has influenced my decision to not buy one. im 100% positive if i worked full time and made a decent amount i would've just went out and bought the c's. by making this and showing you guys how i did it makes me feel like i gave back to the supra community as well.

as for testing the shifter i will def have a spare stock shifter with me in my car and i always carry a toolset, so just incase ill be set. from my understanding it is almost impossible for the shifter to break and have something fall into the trans.

i apologize for my lack of response til now, but no sadly i do not have any pics of my shifter, its already installed, but i do have pics of my old one, just not on this computer, but trust me, yours will be NOOOWHERE even close to as short as mine, the bottom of my shift knob ( trd classic knob) was below my shift boots base

i have very very very slight play in the shifter.. neutral is a tad tight but you can easily tell your in netural. i have replaced the two bushings with marlin crawler bushings. shifting also takes a little more effort, but thats a given with a short throw.
