Take the drive shaft out or put it in neutral, pull the parking brake so the tires dont turn, then twist the pinion back and fourth, there shouldnt be much of any backlash. If it moves more then 1/8 inch thats alot.

If thats excessively loose, It could be why your breaking u-joints. The driveshaft is gaining momentum in that slight amount of play, and then bieng shocked to a stop. The traction and weight of the tires and wheels on one end, and the weight of the flywheel and power of the engine on the other. It could be problem for u-joints but i would hate to see the ring and pinion teeth at that point.

Also look at the driveshaft closely. The u-joints should line up in the same rotation from one end to the other.

So i checked it and Yeah i has more than 1/8in play on the pinion it makes a big click. So i guys this means rebuilt diff?

.15MM or .006 inch is the middle of the range, If you have more then 1/8 inch thats more then should be and could explain broken parts from excessive windup and shock.

That would be my guess. You could also try grease fitting-less joints. There not hollow.

So I talked to this guy spencer from weir performance and asked him about a rebuilt, he quoted me for around $400 in parts and $350 for labor. Im no expert but to me it sounds not to bad right? but I dont know what do you guys think?

^ do both your tire's spin easy

or does it peg leg alot or transfer back and forth between peg leg and lock up

if tansfers back and forth good time to rebuild

if the lsd action works good don't bother

I was quoted $500 for labour and parts from a local rear end only shop. The only thing I would provide them with is the diff and the new 2way lsd carrier. And even after that my dad told me hes got a shop that he uses that will charge less. I would shop around if I were you.

As for the u joints, like Dave said Ive never seen a broken on a supra. Jeep with a corvette motor went through 3 in one afternoon once. That was a wild weekend. Ive got a 1 peice driveshaft, and Im pretty sure the u joint is designed for a dodge 3500 hd Ram. Its huge, thick...
