I recently was reading up on proper break in procedure for my rebuilt 7M that will be going back into my car in about a week. I searched and came across this thread http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48993
however quoting jdub "You want to make several hard runs to ~4000 rpm...you want to get to that rpm as quickly as possible then let the car coast back down to 10mph" How should i go about doing this with an Auto?...

Thanks for taking your time to read this

There is no "coast" mode per say, but in "D", you will have have the tranny stay in the higher gears longer. This limits the amount of engine braking (which you want). Use the 2nd range position...you will get to 4000 RPM faster and will have the engine braking effect. During the coast down, shift into "L" at ~25-30 MPH to max vacuum on the rings.

Ok thanks a million guys, sorry I was not able to get to my thread earlyer. I just kind of escaped from the garage for a few min. This will be my first engine break in and engine install ever. I just berely got my freshly rebuilt 7m a few days ago and I want to make sure everything goes right.... So far so good.. I will go ahead and start a build thread soon if you guys are curious to what exactly I am doing... Its been about 6 months of hard work and alot alot of money hehe..

Yep, has to be in L or 2 for it to engine brake (had to hunt through the TSRM for this...)

Drove back to college just now, when OD is off and the car is in 3rd gear it stays engaged no matter the rpm. The engine braking isn't as strong as low or second (gearing probably?) but it still does it.

So what page of the TSRM was this on lol? I need to fix something :biglaugh:

Yeah, the coast is in the transmission using a one way clutch, both OD and 3rd have it (you still see SOME engine braking, but I think it's due more to the nature of a slushbox tranny :D )

Specificly talks about engine braking in L and 2 in the troubleshooting section as well.
