I'm shooting for close to 500rwhp. im not sure whether to stay with the stock manifold and equipment and use a boss lipp turbo or go with the driftmotion t4 turbo kit. im looking fast spool, hard boost and reliability. can anyone tell me if one is better than the other?

im kind of new at this modding stuff so i could use some help. when it comes to turbos, im not too knowlegdeable

A fast spool is dependant on more than one factor, and a big factor is the exhaust area to radius, called AR, as you have probably seen. The bolt ons to the stock manifold are the best responding. But that doesn't a good turbo and good setup will not be signficant gain down low.

A T4 will move a lot more air at just 2 psi than your CT26 does at that point. It is moving more air at lower speeds. In the turbo section, there are various threads on the Boss, Boss jr, and the JT56 turbos. You can find some good info. I just bought a Boss jr, but it isn't installed. Yet.

twin scroll, quick spool valve, weeeeeeeee! lol overall idk bout the differences of the two turbos, im going to run a t-70 pretty decent sized turbo, more of a mid range turbo. boss jr. i've heard but good things from back in the day.

So the driftmotion 67mm turbo vs the boss sr series 67 to4e stage 5 turbo........ which one will spool faster and hit harder?

If they are the same size and the same trim with the same A:R, which I don't know they are, they will function the same.

but the driftmotion 67mm turbo is a t4 and the boss turbo is a direct bolt-on to the stock manifold

T4 vs bolt on is just the connecting flange (I think?)
Spool is determined by the hot side AR. bigger AR = longer spool more power, smaller AR....well obvious.

I believe the compressor wheel is also a factor on spool, a 54 trim will spool a .91 AR slower than a .70

(these are just simplified explanations from the little I've gathered here)

The best way to find the turbo your lookin for is to read around the turbocharger section of the forums

And if you bolt it to an LS3, it will act differently yet. A T4 will provide a larger powerband than the stock manifold. We know that.

The stock manifold will help the turbo spool faster, but also be a restriction. I dynoed at 451rwhp years back on the SP61GT at about 20psi using the stock manifold. Loved the powerband on that setup.

Rob- I will drive up to your house next Thurs/Friday so you can feel what this turbo is capable of.

The main issue I dealt with was boost creep. Out of the box my turbo did 20 psi and that was at a 7psi crack pressure. I have a divorced downpipe and what I think happened is that when the wastegate flapper opened up it blocked off the wastegate pipe portion of the downpipe (basically closing the wastegate as it opened, lol). When we swapped over to a bellmouth downpipe from another member's car (thanks Emilio) and the boost was instantly lower.

As you can see, it wasn't the turbo's fault that my boost went up, rather an incompatibility with the particular downpipe I had bought.

The other quirk I found was that the boost wasn't coming on very strong/quickly for it being a ball-bearing turbo. After connecting an electronic boost controller (AEM tru-boost) I am now able to really spool it quickly by holding the wastegate closed until I get close to my target psi.

If money isn't a problem then BOSS all the way...

With the Boss Sr people hit 500hp all day long and its KNOWN to be
reliable, spools farely quick and hits hard. I'm not saying Driftmotions 67mm isn't
good cause they seem to always make sure there parts are top notch.

But personally i've never seen anyone run there 67mm T4.

I'f i were you just go with the Boss.

Another question along with which turbo, Im shooting for around 500rwhp. Since I wont be running race gas and Ill just be sticking to 91 octane pump gas, will I need to get a turbo rated at more than 500hp to compensate for a gas grade or would I have to just run higher boost?

High boost on 91 is alot of heat.
So yea a turbo rated a little higher than your goal would be good....I believe that DM 67 is rated to 600?

You will have to sacrifice a good tune (power/idle/off boost driving) for safety.
