My machine shop actually sourced a clean used block from the Portland area, and it was 130.00 IIRC.
Do some more checking around, and talk to your machinist, he might have some ideas on where to find a block, or good used engine you can tear down for the block. (You know, like one with a BHG... No problems with the block, especially if your going to bore it anyway etc.)
At worst, your into this under 300.00 I should think, and that's not worth giving up now seeing how you have the parts, and are ready to go.
Someone on here likely has a block laying around that would work. (Portland has MANY shops and importers. Also you can try the salvage yards, they sell engines, and might have one that did not pass the compression test, and would need to be sold for "parts" anyway.
Make sure if you buy a used block that they include the main bearing caps and bolts. From what I understand, they are fitted to each block and line honed, so don't use caps off one block on another without line honing them. (Not needed if the block is in spec, and you use the same caps it was built with from the factory.)
