Body Molding Question

My local parts guys are telling me that the only color of moldings that were available in '87 are blue, burgandy and grey.

Is this correct? I'm looking at my body moldings on my car (brown) and I swear they look like kind of a tan/grey color or maybe a grayish Taupe.

Is this my imagination? Is it possible that the aforementioned available colors are not all the colors available in '87?

Thanks in advance.

From your sig pic it does look like you have grey. I'm not an expert, but an 87 would have the older molding and those didn't come color-matched in a variety of colors like the 92s did with the newer style molding. I've also never seen two different greys, even on my 89 gunmetal car it uses the same grey as all the other grey moldings.

epc shows only three colors available for those moldings, so chances are, your parts guy is right.

I guess so, unfortunately they don't have a grey molding in stock and since it's special order and not returnable I have been reluctant to order it for fear of it not matching my existing moldings.

All I could find were the three colors but I swear to god it looks like it has a taupe or tan shade to the molding. More so than the picture shows, but I can see it in the picture too.

Does the molding in my first post look like straight gray? Maybe I'm color challenged...

It does indeed look somewhat grayish in your first post, do you have a higher res photo?

These are 5.1 megapixel but here's another:

My Bud's 87 JDM Car has brown/bronze trims on it.

Ah-ha! I knew it!!!

Sure wish I could get a parts number 'cause all I hear from the local dealer is "grey, burgundy, blue.

There is definitely a brownish/taupe/bronze color, not grey, not blue, not burgundy.

I come from a land down under
His car is a loaded LTD with DigiDash, not sure if that makes a difference but yes they do exist and look really nice!

I'll ask my parts guy here if he can get them next time I'm there but from memory they're DAMN expensive (not very often I flinch at prices but a full set of mouldings stopped me in my tracks and is why mine are still crap)

I should probably say why this has become an issue:

My neighbor backed into my previously never scratched or dented '87. It bent up the fender which I just replaced and now have to color match (metallic brown/taupe) as well as scratching the front most body molding. Needless to say I wish I had a time machine.

I am still working it out with my neighbors insurance co, so if I can't get a matching color molding than I have to grind said insurance co. for a full set. As IJ pointed out...not cheap. If I find out later that gray does not match this molding (and I don't think it does) then I eat the cost for a new set of "matching" color moldings.

Either that's grey or every car in CO that didn't come with blue or maroon came with the bronze. I've probably got 2 1/2 sets, all that color and from about a dozen different cars.

I see the bronze color now, any possibility thats its considered to be gray, but actually a bronze/taupe color?

That's what I'm putting my money on. ;)

That does look darker than usual. But I thought anything other than grey would be color matched to the body of the car, I didn't know Toyota decided to just slap on a bronzeish molding on some cars o_O Good luck finding some, I like the shade better than the normal grey.

Yeah it's definitely got a taupe or bronze tint.

I just haven't been able to get a color code/part # yet.

As I said, I'm trying to settle the "neighbor who backed into my car" case, and I need to know whether I'm looking at a complete set of moldings if I can't find a match. I checked with the local dealer and called some others and they don't have a grey molding in stock to compare mine with.

It's bad enough that my fender got crunched, but now I have to fight it out with the insurance company to put it back the way it was. They have things on their estimate like "r&r front molding....wtf? You can't r&r a f'd up molding. No mention of inner fenderwell replacement (also f'd up) etc. etc. Where do they come up with this crap? They gave me an estimate that was about 60% of what it will cost me to fix it right. Big surprise huh? So if you add to that a complete set of moldings...I'm so screwed it's not even funny. All because my idiot neighbor couldn't look where he was going while backing up.

Thanks to all those who have commented. I appreciate it because I'm trying to figure this out and everyones comments are information on this are helpful (even though I haven't quite resolved what color this thing is yet) .

Your Toyota parts place should be able to tell you where the moulding is thats available in the country, might help to see if these any local members willing to go to the place that has the part and take a pic of it for you for comparison purposes.
