check this out- a toyota pickup with a 22re motor (4 cylander)- starts and RUNS (all the while spewing out oil that you can see if you look carefully), and you can actually see parts of the rotating assembly moving up and down through the hole in the block.

My first Toyota 4 X 4 died a similar death. Front end took a drink and launched cylinder 4. Was still able to drive the truck home. Lack of oil killed the head.

Also had an old Corolla that the rod cap fell off cylinder 3. WHen I hit a bump I heward an awkward noise that abruptly ended. The rod would fall down, crank would knock oit back to the top then the velves would push it down a bit. It would ride there making no noise until I hit a bump again.

IT is too blurry to tell what is going on. I guess if there is a way to break a rod without jamming it into the block then that is possible.

While those last a long time, they are not thick walled and don't have stout shortblock pieces.

yes, the 22re is a pretty reliable motor. i kindof feel bad about the 7m swap i'm going to do this summer. i'll keep the 22re handy incase anything happens to the 7m.

however, i will be doing a full stock rebuild on the 7m before it goes in the truck. i cannot justify putting another 100k mile motor in there, and possibly having it be unreliable.

That engine has a double roller timing chain. It used to have metal guides to hold it in place. Toyota went to plastic for noise reduction and CAFE. That is fine for the first 150,000 miles, but the plastic breaks and the chain bounces off the front cover.

In time, it does break through. Usually into the water jacket leading to new bearings and/or crankshaft. I suppose it could have oil also the way it is pumping on the ground. I want a better look just out of curiosity.

Those motors are fucking indestructible.
Indeed mines done 265K miles now and pulled 63.2rwkw or 85rwhp which is what it should make, valve stem seals fuck rings fucked burns 1L plus of oil every 500 miles or so and cops a caning every day.

Was lots of fun when it blew a hole in the zorst dropping back to second at 60+mph and having it back fire. or go through tunnels in car park entrances on the limiter in first back firing.:biglaugh:

I had a rod break on my 22R once (was very souped up, made 200rwhp!).
I killed the motor 20 miles from home. It made it the whole way home. I had
a new motor sitting at home, and was broke, so I figured I'd just keep going to
get as close to home as possible. I made it all the way home, and let it idle
for 5 min, just staring at it, in awe, watching it clack away. Then I hopped in,
drove the truck into the garage, and cut it off. It never started again. I
then dropped the new motor in and went on my merry way.

22Rs rock!

^ for sure. :) i've been thinking of ripping mine down when i pull it out and possibly rebuilding it. there are plenty of cheap toyota trucks around to drop it into. i have way too many ideas for projects, though...

a while back there was a video with a toyota truck that these people were trying to destroy, but it wouldn't die. At one point they even blew a building up with the truck on top, and the truck started back up on the ground.

anyone know what i'm talking about or have it?

I miss my truck :(

it would run low on oil, make tons of valvetrain noise, throw oil in it and it would shut up

bought the damn 4x4 for $1K, and sold it years later for $2500... I would have kept it if it had A/C too...
